    Scope Mount Help

I'm working on a 20" AR with an A3 flat top upper. It has the standard A2 front sight which I'd like to keep. I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4-12x50 scope to mount on it but I don't have rings yet.

Not sure if I need high mounts rings to clear the front sight.

    Any suggestions?

This my first scope on one of my AR's as I've been shooting iron sights ever since. I apologize if I haven't provided enough info. Looking to shoot out to 300 but no further than that.

    Thanks guys!

You don't need to worry about the front sight as it will not effect your sight picture thru the scope, I would suggest the Badger Ordnance AR 15 rings, they will be the right height.

Burris P.E.P.R. $70.00. Just get the 1" or 30MM, whatever you scope tube size is.

American Defense Recon or Recon X. For you the Recon X...Pricey but definitely worth it. That is what I have on mine. I like the quick release option.

Thanks for letting me know that the front sight won't get in the way. Remember I have the 50mm objective on this so I'm hoping it's a none issue. You mentioned Badger, but they have a range of heights so I'm not sure if you meant the standard height would work for me. They are also 2x as much as the Burris PEPR, so I need to take that into account as well.

Definitely priced right for my budget and I like the 1 piece design. I'll definitely look into it.

Looks very cool and like the Burris the base is a 1 piece design. The quick release is a nice feature, but I don't have the need for changing between different rifles so not really needed for my application.

          Thanks all for your suggestions.

I'll have to post a pic of the finished rifle.

OK, to detirmine the optimal scope ring height it involves some math here. Because of the length of the scope, the objective lens will be over top of the front handguards, so you must ensure that you get the scope hight enough to clear them.

You said you have a 50mm Objective, so you divide that in half you get 25mm, round it up to 30mm to take into account the tube around the lens and give you breathing room incase you want to add butler caps.

Then, I don't know if yours is a 1" or 30mm tube, but lets say 1", divide that in half and subtract that from the 30mm (doing the conversion of course) you end up with 0.6811, this is the amount of distance the Objective lens bell hangs below the bottom of the main body tube.

This is roughly the height you will need for your rings, there is a bit of play in this as if you have non free float handguards that slope downward towards the muzzle of the barrel then you can go alittle lower in seating the scope, but if you have a railed handguard then you must stick to this number, and that actually applies to from the bottom of the portion of the ring where the scope sits in to the top of the rails.

In the case of Badger Ordnance (pricey, but well worth it, I own 4 pair now) that number would relate to the B number in their heights, which only the ultra high would work, little higher than needed but not too bad.

Thanks for the great info, Craig. Much appreciated.

              I also found this.

BTW, the scope has a 1" tube and the rifle will have a free float hand guard.

              Thanks again!

Keep in mind that Midway guide is for bolt guns and the like, where the scope base sits higher than the barrel/forarm. Because there is no drop in height from where the scope mounts to where to Ojective lens will be you have to use the number I gave you.

Finally got that @#$%^ front sight off and was able to get everything together. I haven't sighted it in yet. Hopefully I'll be able to get done this weekend.
