My buddy is looking for a dependable super sniper scope. His Leapers failed many times (after being replaced several times as the lens shifted on the 3rd round). His European (I am not sure which) cracked in two during some range time as well. The Chinese actually held up better. Can anyone recommend a suitable scope for the SKS? I believe it needs to be a shorty, if I am not mistaken. Thanks

Dependable SKS Scope

Any of the high quality name brands will work fine on an SKS, which doesn't really have much recoil. Leupold, Nikon, Burris, etc, are all good, and shouldn't fail. They'll cost a good bit more than his Leapers scopes, of course.
A bigger problem on the SKS is the mount, typically. The dust cover/receiver cover mounts are not very stable, which defeats the purpose of a magnified scope.
The best bet is a drill and tap style that will mount directly to the receiver, giving it the stability it needs.
Here's a good article on SKS scope mounts:
Then there's the final problem, which is that the SKS just isn't a sniper-accuracy weapon platform. While a scope or red dot can help people with aging vision, you'll never get 1 moa groups out of a typical SKS.sigpic

The above words are true. If it is not mounted else ware, you will always have trouble with it.

+1 on the drill n tap rather than a receiver cover mount. I haven't done this, but if I decided I wanted to mount a scope on my SKS this is the only method I'd use.
However, as Maixon and the author over on Surplus Rifle point out one really needs to consider whether an SKS is good platform to scope. It's certainly not a sniper rifle, but with an SKS you know to be accurate (for an SKS) a lower power scope might be nice.
The receiver cover mount I tried would shift.Last edited by TonyNorCal; 05-28-2007, 3:41 PM.Comment

You can get a "scout" mount which replaces the rear sight. It's very nicely built - much better finish and quality than the Yugo itself!

Then add an inexpensive red-dot scope (open or closed style).
Just remember - the rifle isn't all that accurate so there's not much point mounting a good/expensive scope.

There is no good scope solution for the SKS. The folks that go the route of drilling and tapping the receiver have to buba the stock, and disassembly of the rifle becomes difficult. Also, many have problems with the ejected cartridge hitting the scope or scope mount. Enjoy the SKS without a scope it just wasn't made for one.Comment

this is the only solution, IMO. add something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/Tasco-Red-Dot-Si...QQcmdZViewItem
and you are good to go. Don't put 4-5 hundred dollar scope on a $200 rifle
