Leupold Scope for Remington 700

Hows it going? I am thinking about purchasing a Remington 700 chambered in 308. I am also interested in purchasing a scope for this firearm and I heard that Leupold is a good choice. I was just wondering if someone can suggest a decent model of the Leupold scope that is around $300 which is within my budget.

Keep in mind you'll also want Leupold scope base and rings. The base will need to be two pieces if you plan to load it from the top (aka no removable magazine). For the scope you need to decide on what your using it for. 50mm is a little heavier than 40mm but works a little better in lower light. If your shooting 800 yards you'll want a really high end scope, I went with Leupold's VX-I 3-9x50 from Walmart... I know it sounds terrible, but I get Leopold's warranty and if something was wrong with the scope out of the box I know Walmart will take it back. 0Plus I'm using it strictly for hunting, I'll probably never shoot over 300 yards (not that I couldn't). Plus if it gets beat up some, I don't feel nearly as bad as I would feel if I beat up a +$1000 scope.

+1 on the Leupold 3-9x40 VX-II fantastic scope for the money, dual dovetail bases and rings will cost around $50. I like to have my scope mounted as close to the bore as possible and don't like 50mm objectives unless the magnification is over 12x. An exit pupil of 4-5mm will deliver plenty of light for target shooting and hunting.

Get a Leupold 3X9X40 and you will be set for life. I have that scope on more than a dozen rifles and it has worked perfectly for many years. If you want to save some cash get one off e-bay. That is where I have gotten the 10-15 leupolds I bought. No problems and they still have the lifetime warr even if you are not the original buyer.
Stay away from the 50-56mm OB lens. It makes you mount the scope higher and then your head is in an un-natural position when shooting. The extra light gathering means nothing since you cannot hunt at night. The 40mm lens will work well during legal hunting hours/light.

For the most part, you can still use 50mm rings and medium rings and not gooseneck to see through your scope. What application is this rifle used for? Hunting or LR shooting? I use low rings for my 50mm scopes. At 40mm there is a lot of gap between the objective and barrel, so you have some room to go to a 50mm on low or medium rings without it being so high.

For a hunting rifle the Leupold will do fine. If you plan to use it for LR shooting, you'll need external turrets, a bushnell 3200 10x or SWFA 10x will work better.

If its going to be a hunting rifle check out the Redfield Revilution. Its made in the Leupold factory in Oregon and you can get a 3-9x40 for $149. It is vary comparible to the VX-I.

My buddy just picked up one of those redfields and it is excellent. crystal clear. I'm going to have to pick one up for next year to replace my cheap bushnell.

Sorry to derail the conversation, but are you sure you can't load from the top if you have 1 piece base? My Rem 700 .308 tactical is coming on Monday and I already received my NF 20 MOA base in 1 piece. I hope I won't have to return it, I want to be able to load from the top.

You won't have to return it. That was complete FUD, as was that part about needing a Leupold base and rings.

You can load from the top with a 1-piece base, no problems.

My rem 700 has a one piece base that does not interfere with loading from the top.
