    First Rifle and Scope

My awesome wife wanted told me today she was going to be getting me my first rifle (first firearm at all actually) for my birthday, its going to be a Savage 93r17f, her uncle is an avid hunter and recommended .17HMR over .22LR. then suggested manufacturers for her price range. She told me that I would need to take care of a scope and other stuff for it and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations, gonna use it for varmint, and target shooting.
Probably around $150 range, can stretch to $200 if I REALLY gotta but would prefer to use that $50 for ammo or whatever else Im going to need. Besides I cant see much point in spending $500 for a .17 rifle
I saw this on Cabela's on sale for half price, it looks like it is the same as this one on BSA's website anyone have any input? It looks like a good deal, but I really dont know a whole lot about optics yet , I guess I need a primer.

What do I need to go along with the scope? Mounting systems are separate? Sorry to need a little hand holding, but I want to learn and get better at knowing what I need.

Thanks, I know, but Im not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, and I was planning to pick up a Ruger 10-22 in about a month or so anyhow, might be 60 days since I want to get optics for the Savage, it will just delay that purchase a little.

So yea, thats the plan, any advice on optics?

even though they are rimfire rifles, I would really suggest to shy away from the BSA, the poor quality will stand a good chance of turning you off of shooting. When you make a correction to get your shots where you want them but the correction doesn't work, or when your zero starts to wander it will get frustrating.

Now my own personal experience with low end optics is pretty scarce, I believe in the buy once, cry once. I would suggest taking a look at the Super Sniper series of scopes, you can get a brand new one for $300 and they are built like a tank, decent glass, and if you decide down the road that you want a bigger gun, the scope will be able to move onto that rifle as well, something that BSA sure won't be able to.

For optics I'd look at the Vortex Crossfire [low-end] selections. You can get a decent 3-9 [or lower] for around $100 bucks.

I use their Strikefire [red dot] on my AR and more than adequate.

I'm going to try out a Crossfire on a XS7 .308 soon and we'll see how she holds up to the recoil.

With that being said I have a cheap BSA 3-9 on a Marlin .22 and she's held up fine. I'll admit though I haven't put more than 500-100 some odd rounds down the pipe though. So far she's held 0 just fine however.
