holographic sights for an AR

Hello to all,

I just bought from the Costa Mesa gun show today an "AIM" holographic red dot to go on top of the carry handle of my AR using a screw on type of mount. I wonder about the height of the scope above the bore line and was wondering/worried if this was the best one for my application???? Opninons please.

Well...what is your application?

For plinking at the range it's fine.

For self-defense it's not ideal because it's difficult to get a good cheek weld with the optic that high. That said, it works fine for some people. If you wanted to explore other options you could remove carry handle (if it's removable) and mount your optic to the receiver. If the handle isn't removable (A1 or A2 receiver) you could get a gooseneck mount that puts the optic out in front of the carry handle, or install a railed handguard and mount it on that.

Also if your optic is to high and depending on your stock there are all kinds of cheek rest you can add.
