Scope rings for Rem700

I just picked up a Rem700 SPS Varmint in 308 and currently in need of some rings.

The equipment used are the following:

Remington 700 SPS Varmint 308
Viper Vortex PST 4-16x50
EGW 20 MOA 1-piece base

I have looked at the Seekins, Mark4 and Badger, but all seem to be a little too pricey for me. Can someone recommend something lower priced (not $20 low) but will still deliver pretty good quality? Which height as well (I will be using BC caps)

Just get the seekins. Only thing I use.

EGW rings. As good (frankly better) than everyone else's rings without the big ticket. EGW machines is the actual machine shop making the rings versus folks that just put their name on rings made out of their shop. How do I know? EGW makes the rings for a lot of these guys.

Seekins. Great guy, great support, great product. The EGW stuff is o.k. too but, I had EGW and Seekins one piece bases side by side and there is no comparison. The Seekins is a nicer piece.

I' d find a used set of Badgers if I was on a tight budget.

Seekins, TPS or EGW as well.

I've used the Burris ones with very good results. They are definitely not cheap but not too bad.

Oops, didn't read enough. The Burris XTR's are a nice ring for a low price. They are frequently recommended as a low cost but decent ring.

The best low cost and well made rings are TPS. The burris are pretty good too but a little big for my tastes.

Whats the advantage of the steel ring over a aluminum ring?

Was looking at the TPS TSR rings and they seem right in my price range.

I prefer aluminum rings to steel. Some people feel that steel is stronger but modern billet aluminum rings are just as strong and they won't mar up your scope tube and weigh less.

Height depends on what stock you are using and the height of the comb. If you are using an AICS or McMillan, most likely you want med or high. If you are using an HS precision, you want low.

Didn't realize the stock would make a difference. Wouldn't the scope stay at the same height no matter what stock was on there?

Don't forget that the objective lens diameter is a little important too.

It makes a difference because the comb/cheek height on the stock will effect how high up your head is. On my HS precision stock I need to have low rings because the comb is so low I need a chinweld with high/med rings. On my AI rifle I need high rings because the cheekpiece puts my head higher up on the gun.

I have a 308 700 as well, I am using a leupold 6-20 x 40 powered scope. It shoots 1/2 MOA and I love it. I used the leupold scope mounts I got from midway i think for about 25 bucks and 25 bucks for the mount. I got the Low mounts and there is about 1/16" between the bell and the barrel.

I have a set of TPS lows here. Will see if they will be suitable if my scope ever comes.
