For $400, I would get this scope for varminting.

Excellent recommendation. I would wholeheartedly agree.

500 yards is pretty far for .223. You'll need a scope with turrets and reliable tracking. Calgunner Beetle Bailey has had great success with this scope ontop of his Savage, killed many squirrels using the scope.

P.S. Buy from Scott @ Liberty Optics and mention you're a Calgunner.

Go with a Nikon Monarch or Prostaff.

Like others said, Nikon makes great scopes for great prices. The glass on them is very nice. I recently replaced my Buckmaster went with a Millet TRS-1 though and really like it. You should give them a look. For $300 and all the features it has, its a steal.

Varmint optics you say? I think I have found the best scope in the $400 range (ok, IMHO). A real hidden gem.., once you've looked thru it you'll buy it. Beats the suggested ones here for sure at $400

Opps, sorry. I thought I said it, guess not

Weaver Grand Slam 6-20x40 scope, good for varminting. If anyone's interested, meet me at my range trips and I'll bring one. Many who's looked thru mine bought one later... because it's a real bargain at $400.

Burris Fullfield II with the varminter reticle. I have the 4.5-14X50 on my varmint AR and the glass compares very favorably to 50% more expensive scopes. The adjustments are dead-on all the way around the box.
