What range for a red dot?

I have an Eotech and was wondering at what range should I scope in the red dot at for practicality? I have it on my AR chambered in 223. I'm thinking 25 to 50 yards. which makes more sense and why?

50 yards spending on your definition of what's practical. Is home defense practical or shooting at different distances at pieces of paper?

50 works. Slightly low out to 50, about 2" high at about 100, and back on at about 200.

I think the most popular with AR-15s is the 50 yard sight in. The vertical distance from the barrel to the iron sights on most AR-15s is the right distance so that a rifle sighted in at 50 yards will also coincidentally be sighted in a 200 yards. The 50yd shot is on the upward part of the trajectory and the 200 yard is on the downward part.

That all said, I learned this from internet readings (albeit a lot of them) and not personal experience, as I don't have an AR-15 yet.

For a non-magnified optic, I like 50 yds. After you zero at 50, verify where it will hit at 5, 25, 75 & 100. you never know.

I zero my aimpoint at the same distance I zero my irons: 25 meters. Shoots about 4-5" high at 100 yards with M855 (62gr 5.56mm), 16" barrel.

25 or 50 and you're fine. Ultimately, it comes down to how far are you going to shoot it. Let that be your guide more than anything else.

If you choose a 25 meter (or yard) zero just be aware that it's good for shooting out to 25 meters but not much else. At 100 yards you'll be holding under by almost 6 inches, and about 9 inches at 200 yards. If you only ever shoot 25 meters on a square range, go for it.

For more general purpose use, 50 and 100 are more useful because you'll hit within 2" of point of aim out to 200 yards.
