Not to be rude, but to get a scope with those specs for under 200 your best bet is Chinese Optics Inc. What do you want to do with the scope? Hunting or long range target shooting. Your best bet for cheapish decent optics is Nikon, but again 200 bucks is going to make it hard.Last edited by Guntech; 06-19-2010, 10:10 PM." Most 6-24's will be 50mm objective. So here is a 6-18x40
If you have to have the 6-24 magnification this is probably the cheapest you'll get it in a decent scope, although like I said its 50mm objective.
The most you should really need is 12x magnification, when you get much more magnified than that you get the mirage effect, and the more you zoom the worse it gets, especially if your hunting mid day when its sunny and the wind is blowing.Last edited by Guntech; 06-19-2010, 10:18 PM." IF you are planning on using it for big game hunting all you need is a LEUPOLD 3X9X40 non-AO or a 3.5X10X40. You will be able to get one off e-bay for about that much. Do not worry about used. Leupolds do not have problems and if it does it is still covered and you will pay nothing to get it made right.
I have 3X9X40 Leupolds on most of my big game hunting rifles including my 7mm rem mag/300win mag/338win mag and 257 weatherby mag. The 3.5X10X40 on my 25-06 is nice as is the 2X7 on a custom (small) 308win but the 3X9X40 scopes have worked well at all ranges and weather conditions.
My 2 CentsA 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Thanks for all the input. I am planning on some long range target shooting and some hunting. The spec's i wrote were more just a base idea of what i was thinking. I am vary new to larger cal. Rifle also this is the first year i will be hunting. Most of my shooting has been handgun/shout gun. I currently have a simmons 3-9x24 on the 300wm. I found that at 100yds its hard to bullet holes with that scope. I want something i can see the holes at 200yds easy.Comment

The first scope seems to be a good match for what i want. Thanks for looking for me. If you see anything like it a little cheeper please let me know. Thanks again. I have no problem buying used form someone off this site also. Most 6-24's will be 50mm objective. So here is a 6-18x40

For the bench get a good pair of binos or spotting scope. For hunting Big game a 6x minimum is REALLY going to handicap you. Imagine the frustration when you push out or jump a big buck and can't find it in your scope..Originally posted by jmonte35Disagree. Been trying to teach lewdogg21 how to hunt. +1 a 3x9x40 is perfect.....Help yourself by leaving the scope on 3x when you hunt.Comment

+1 For the Leupold 3-9x40 the new VX-II scopes are a great deal for the money, lifetime waranty, excellent light transmission. On a hunting rifle I wouldn't want anything more powerful than a 4.5-14x40, increased magnification is not a substitute for quality glass.IF you are planning on using it for big game hunting all you need is a LEUPOLD 3X9X40 non-AO or a 3.5X10X40. I think your probably right. Most hunting in ca you are not really doing any real long range shots i asume....? I am however going to hunt in Or and Co. I know out of state fee's are a killer! I have family there tho.Comment

Im really thinking of getting the VX-II. The spec you wrote below 4.5-14x40 sound perfect for me. Is there a scope close to my price range with those spec's? Thanks again to everyone this is a huge help!Comment

i think this is the one for me. Let me know what you guys think.

You said you cannot see the bullet holes. That is less a function of the power than the QUALITY of the glass in the scope. I have a 45X spotting scope I have trouble seeing 204 bullets holes with yet my scope on my 50bmg st at 18-22X will show them to me real well. The spotting scopes are Bushnell and Simmons(about $200 each) but the scope is a nightforce that costs $1800.
As far as other states. I have hunted in Ca/Wy/Nev and Col. A 3X9X40 non-AO or a 3.5X10X40 non-AO work just fine for big game.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

And don't forget to put it back after you zoom. Been there, done that in the left the scope turned up too high, jumped a buck and couldn't find it.
3x9 is all you need like divern said. 300 yard shots at deer arent' that common unless your hunting sage flats or chasing antelope. I shot my first blacktail at 350-360 yards with a BAR in 300 mag w/ 3x9 but it was nearly the end of the hunt and he was a big somma*****..Originally posted by jmonte35Disagree.
