I would suggest going to a hunting store and trying them yourself. I myself found the Nikon to be nearly the same as the Leupold for significantly cheaper. I personally recommend the Buckmaster. I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything(other than a nightforce).

SWFA has the "super sniper" line which are good scopes for the money that have the mils you want.

The 10, 16 and 20 fixed power scopes with rear focus run 299.

        I have a Leupold VX-II 3-9X40 Duplex. Model 56760 on my .300 Win Mag Model 70.

IMO for glass you get what you pay for. I have not used any of the less expensive versions.

You can find good deals on the model I have around the $300 range.

I like Nikon and Leupold. Check out the reviews at opticsplanet.com.

I have a Nikon Prostaff that I got for $90 and I can get you one for that price also. I absolutely love it. I shot submoa groups with it on my rifle and it is clear as can be. It really stand up right there equally against my leupolds. It has not lost its zero and I keep it in the bed of my truck while I am huntng and I drive like a madman and it really holds up against the abuse.

Try Vortex. Check 'em out. I've been running one on my 50 for a bit and love it. Super low cost, clear, 100moa of adjustment and it looks good. Excellent customer service as well.

+1 Vortex Viper. Nikon Buckmasters is another fine option.

For a hunting rifle(or pistol) used in any weather put a Leupold on it. I use 3X9X40 NON-AO with duplex reticle and if you sight it in 2.75" high at 100 yards you can hold on animal out to any range you should be shooting at(approx400yds).
Many years of being in a gun shop and expierence hunting taught me to use a Leupold and not have any troubles with it in the field. All of my serious hunting rifles/pistols have leupolds on them. Most of the rifles wear 3x(x40 but I do have acouple of 3.5X10X40 NON-AO and one 2X7 on a custom compact rifle.
I do have Nightforce on my 50's and they are great but too much cash for all my rifles.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

the best Bang for the Buck
Sightron. Same lifetime warranty as Leupold. The SII model line is within your price range. I think all SIIs and SIIIs are made in Japan.

                        +1

I've always been a Leupold man, but those new Nikons are VERY comparable, for MUCH less money. I've compared the VXIII to the Nikon in the field, and it was hard to pick a winner.
