    help me pick Leupold accessories...

i just purchased a Remington 700 in .308 Win and am for sure purchasing a Leupold Mark 4 scope.

however, i need to know which scope rings to purchase and what height to buy them. the Leupold scope i'm purchasing will have a 50mm bell, so should i buy the med, high, or super high ring heights.

also, should i purchase the SHORT action 1 piece rail? (.308 is considered short action, not long action right?) or should i just buy the 2 piece rail?

    thanks guys,

Actually, I'm too dumb to decipher Leupold's ring height at the moment. How about Badger Ordnance?

That'll give you both proper cheek weld and minimum height without the objective touching the barrel.

Also check out Seekins if you haven't yet.

If you can afford it, Badger Ordnance is the top of the line.

However, I like the entire Mark 4 line. I am guessing Medium rings will work because the barrel of a Remington 700 dips down. High are guarenteed to work, however you want your scope as low as you can get it due to height over bore issues. If you went with a 40mm scope I would tell you to get low rings as mediums are a tad high. I prefer the 40mm Scopes myself, just so I can get it as low as possible (without touching).

If you cannot afford the Mark 4 rings, then the PRW and QRW rings do work great as well. The US Army runs PRW on their M14 Sniper Conversions and they do a great job. They made their Hollywood Debut in 28 Weeks Later on an Army M14 Sniper Rifle, but that is neither here nor there.

The Leupold Mark 4 1-peice base should work great. But again, if you can afford a Badger Ordnance 20MOA Base, go for it. 99.9% of .308 Rem 700s are short action. However, they do make a long action version. It is extremely rare. It would be marked on the box if it was.

FYI, I carry Leupold, Badger Ordnance, and more.

My recipe for success...when setting up a scope on rifle, I will buy a set of low and a set of med rings....use the one that mounts your scope the closest (without touching....no brainer hopefully) and send the other set back. You should be short action and should also consider a 20MOA base if you're shooting any long distance. I went with a EGW base (1 piece) and Burris (low) Xtr Tac rings on my Rem 700 TLR.

        Congrats on the Remmy!

If you buy leupold, consider buying a used one in good shape. I've done that for several and they have fixed them all no questions asked, and if you buy used that means some other sucker took the retail hit. I like the 10X ones with the TMR reticle but buy whichever you feel will work best for you.

However, I will say this one thing - the Vortex PST are supposed to be out this month, and they will have pretty much every single feature a tactical shooter could ever want for less than a grand. So before you spend 1k-1.5k on a leupold that probably won't have First Focal Plane or knobs that match the reticle consider waiting a bit, it might be worth it. If not, you can still buy that Mark 4

Call Leupold. They will tell you what you need. In my opinion the dual dovetail is the best. I personally like the 2 piece base and have never had a problem with my 700 Sendero in 7mm STW with a MKIII LR scope.

              See Leupold's ring height guide.

I followed this guide for a 700 LTR with Leupold 40mm obj scope. Their recommendation for medium height PRW rings was right on. Close enough to the barrel while leaving enough room to slip on Butler Creek caps.

                thanks for the help guys...

i already made my order at Cabelas...i bought medium and the high rings. after tinkering between the two sets of rings and my new scope, i'll just return the one that i don't need to the Reno, NV retail store.
