Noob question on using red-dot sights

I bought an open red-dot sight for my buckmark camper 22lr, and I'm wondering how to use it.

I know you keep both eyes open, but as far as aiming goes, do I just need to keep the small dot on the target, and that's it? I noticed with the different reticules like the circular one it gets distorted if I don't have one of my eyes in direct alignment. Does that throw off the aim? If all I need to do is superimpose the dot over my target (assuming it is zero'ed in), that is amazing. I haven't tried it yet, I just got it tonight.

    Thanks

Both eyes open favoring your dominant eye. Look at the target, not the red dot.
