im getting an AR soon and i like to shoot at the 100 yrd targets. i also like the idea of having a red dot for "JUST IN CASE STUFF". im thinking i could pull off the scope and use the iron sights for close range if i had to or i saw a set up with a scope and a little red dot on top of that. i dont have much money so the cheapest route is best for now.

100-200 max i've never even shot an AR before so i dont even know whats best to do with one. i only have a shooting range to go to with only 50 and 100yrd targets. to me a red dot is really cool but i dont know how i would be able to use one.Comment

I know its out of your range.... but the acog with red dot would be perfect for you! I like using the 4x optics for target shooting and the red dot is zero'd for about 50yrds.
I've used my eotech at 100yrds.... and if you are only shooting steel then that would be fine but it is still not the same as having some mag.kevin.Comment

I haven't used it myself but a calguns guy has a decent looking setup that may be worth looking at...believe it's a 4x acog clone with a red dot on top...

HUH?I have made accurate hits at 200-300yrds on a torso target with a 4moa dot.But if you obscure your targets behind a jersey barrier that's a different story.Best of both worlds a 1-4x optic.sigpicComment

Buy a cheap ACOG knockoff at the gun show. Try it out I've used the basic ones with lock-tite and they work great for those ranges.
If it gives you a good impression buy a legit one or dont, BSA makes the AR15 specific stealth tactical red dot, light and laser combo for 130 ish - got one f/s if interested.

The light and laser is removable or you can put them on your rails ectComment

How about a red dot with a magnifier?Don't let the name fool you...Comment

That's a myth.
A good marksman can easily do a 1" group at 100 yards with either a 4 MOA Aimpoint or standard iron sights (front sight post is 6 MOA). It's all about consistency and technique, not the size of the front sight or dot.Comment

100yds at a bench? Just use irons. Its better to learn with them anyway. If you have to shoot a red dot get a $20 tasco, hold zero just fine on a .223.Comment

I'd say to pick up a Primary Arms red-dot and magnifier.Comment

Agreed. I am an average if not on the poorer side of accuracy and I can still shoot 4 moa or less with my EoTech517 at 100 yrds. However, if you are going to be shooting for pure accuracy I would go towards a scope, otherwise red dots are good out to 300 yrds.Comment

OK, well, maybe you can do tight groups with a red dot, but I will gladly bet on my acog agaisnt a zero power 4 moa red dot or iron sights for accuracy.
How about $25 dollars a round for 20 rounds at 200 yards?
We will place out twenty target at 200 yards. the target bullseye will be 3" wide - black, on white paper. Military rounds. Since my eyes are bad I will have a younger buddy of mine shoot my rifle, you shoot your own. Closest to the middle of the bull on each target wins $20.00 on that target.
The gun must be a service rifle A2 which could be used in competition for service rifle class.
Any takers from this thread posted above this post? Omega??? Kool??? I'm calling you out on this one. Here is your chance for some easy money.
A scope with crosshairs is even better to placing a shot exactly where you want. At 100 yards a zero magnification red dot is no match for a 4 power scope...if it was you would see more folks using red dots on match rifles...I haven't seen many myself being used in meets.I love America for the rights and freedoms we used to have.Comment

I have a Aimpoint Comp M4 and PA 3x magnifier for sale if you are interested.
