Need Assistance with Scope

I was given this leupold scope by my dad. My dad use to own a few guns before a layoff in the 90's forced the sale of them. He found this scope in storage and couldn't remember what he had it on. I don't know much about it, meaning what type of rifle would this scope do well on? Also is their way to tell what it might be worth (I'm keeping it regardless, to hand down to my son). The reason I ask, is because a guy at work offered me $20.00 for it and it didn't seem right.

The scope is a Leupold BR-36x. Thanks in advance for any info. I am going to try to attach photos.

From the info I could find by searching the model number, it looks to be worth at least $350-500.

Actually looks like most guys sell them closer to the $500 mark.
