Help me with a rifle scope

I just purchased a Keltec Su16 from a friend and I want to put a scope on it. I want a variable power i THINK . would a 3-9 be to much for a rifle like this? I was thinking about going with Leupold, just because they seem like fair priced and good quality. Not looking for anything big and bulky though, this will be mainly a target gun. Any advice would be very helpful as this is my first firearm.

What distances are you looking to shoot at?
Whats your budget?

You may want to consider a 1-4x optic. That would give you good close in sights similar to a Red Dot but also have some magnification for some distance.

Another option would be an Aimpoint Micro or an Eotech XPS2 with a 3x Magnifier.

I think around 400$. I am not sure how far I would like to shoot, I dont want to be too limited though. Since it is my first and only rifle right now, I was thinking I would like it to be somewhat versatile so I can shoot short and longer distances (maybe 200+ yards?)

You may want to look at the Redfield line, made by Leupold. $159. will get you the 3x9x40 with the Accurange reticle or $209 the 3-9x50 version of the same. I have found for me the 3-9x50 on a carbine, even at close ranges, gives very quick target acquisition and 9 power,especially with a ballistic reticle, will get you out to the effective limits of the .223 cartridge. Plus you get Leupolds forever guarantee with it.

after firing the rifle today, there is no way I would want a hunting type scope. My little red dot was awesome at 100 yards. Maybe not super accurate but considering I was just winging it trying to sight it in and my first time, I was hitting my target repeatedly. I may look into a nicer red dot setup, say one with a 3x mag. I checked out the two that were brought up to me but are there any others I should look at?

those looks pretty nice! Looks like you can fab up some extra magnification for it too if needed. My dot sight seemed to work good today, it says tactedge on it, not sure what that is but its el cheapo one that it came with.
