    Which EoTech

I've used Aimpoint COMPs in the past and now leaning towards an Eotech...they have so many models, and so far I like the XPS model due to size or the Eotech 557.AR223 for the BDC dots...any advice on which to give best bang for the buck??

XPS2. The battery design is simply superior and if you're going unmagnified, the BDC is a waste of time.

I use the #552 for a couple of reasons. GG&G makes a throw lever type mount that adds nothing to the installed height. This allows for co-witnessing the iron sights and/or a magnifier. All the other quick detach mounts add extra height. Also the 552 uses AA batteries that are much more plentiful than the little "N" type batteries. The 552 is also night vision capable for use outside California, or possibly in California as well depending on your set-up.

NV usage I think it for such a small market - generally speaking - it is hard to spend that extra coin so I think the XPS2 set at 65 MOA circle with 1 MOA aiming dot reticle pattern - like the original proven solid 512 - is the way to go.

I just got a 517. Like someone said before the the bdc is pretty pointless. What I like about the 517 is that it is non nv compatible which makes it a bit cheaper,"no civilian needs nv really." it runs off AA, the front of the sight is raised to fit over the hand rails and also the buttons are on the side so if your using a magnifier you don't have to flip it down to adjust brightness or turn on/off etc. Really all eotechs
are the same in sight picture it's just whether you want nv or a shorter site etc.

You're almost there. They are all the same except for height, battery, NV and sight length.
The 517 has an integral riser for 1/3 cowitness, as does the 553, 557, 516 and 556 (my favorite) series. The 512 and XPS series do not have an integral riser so they are absolute cowitness.

PS. You may want to consider the NV option as 'esskay' reported that you can use the NV button to save battery life, so you don't have to power on/off.

Just drop in and attach directly to your receiver.

Other states allow Night Vision equiped weapons, California doesn't. You can, however, use a night vision monocular mounted to you via a helmet or other headgear. Just don't mount it to the weapon.

That's not true. California only prohibits using a magnifying telescopic sight along with an IR illuminator. You can put an NV sight on a rifle if you spent the money. No infrared lamps though, because if your NV sight has any magnification at all (and none are exactly 1:1), then you're in violation of CA law.
