Need help with scopes for ar

I know there is alot of threads in regards to which scope is should be bought, but this will be my 1st scope and im not sure how to look for one, I want to be able to shoot 300-500 yards, it will be going on a ar15 16'' barrell. Would like to get either a Nikon or Leupold with the bells not to big where i would need to raise it. I dont get the 15x40mm with mil dot lingo. Can someone educate me a little? Thanks!!!!

What the 15x40mm means is that the scope offers a 15X magnification and the objective lens is 40mm. In general, the bigger the objective lens, the more light the lens can gather thus will give you a better picture. However, a 15X40mm is not a variable power scope. That means that it is fixed at 15x magnification and can not be adjusted. A scope that is 3-9X40mm has a 40mm objective lens and the magnification can be adjusted from 3x to 9x. For a good starter scope, get a Leupold Mark AR 3-9x40mm. It runs about 350 for the mildot version and as low as 299. Throw in a coupon here and there and you can get it down to $300. The glass is extremely clear for the price. I have one and it functions flawlessly. I have moved it over to my Remington 700 now and put the Eotech back on my AR.

thanks for the help nessal, i will be ordering a eotech xps, but not sure what the 3-0, 3-1, 3-2 and so on means, do you by chance know what those mean? I was thinking of getting the 3-0, guessing thats just one ring instead of 2? I think the 3-0 comes with night vision comaptible, do i need that and what is it used for?

You don't need the night vision setting, unless you have NVGs and are hunting 'yotes in the dark.

What it means it that the brightness of optics can be turned down low enough to be used properly with NV devices.

Should save you up to $50 if you don't get a NV-compatible XPS. The XPS 2-0 looks to be the Non-NV-compatible model.
