Telescope for longer distances?

So I have a Konus spotting scope. Problem is when I went to Ione for 300yds, I had the hard time seeing the shots. Even with shoot-n-c, it seem I have to get some kind of pattern first. So I read here that telescopes are not good for short distances, but how are they for 200+ yds? I see that some longer distance shooters use Kowa?

I looked at swfa, opticsplanet, cameraNY and higher end spotting scopes are priced enough you can build an high-end AR. But it seems the power seems low still. Even with HD, can you really see a hole at 300yds if your bullet didn't make the shoot-n-c? Can you see at 500yds?

Anyway, wife gave away her telescope so I'm thinking of picking up a cheapie on craigslist or ebay. But I'd like to know if it's it'll work for medium range.

Have you tried binoculars? Big 5 and radio shack have both binoculars and telescopes.
I am certain if you go to big 5, you can ask to try it outside and see if it will work for you.

I have some nice Nikon binoculars. I can't recall how the power is compared to my Konus 80. But I do know I don't use them because my Konus was better at 100. Plus the Konus is easier to use. Will check out big-five.

Though there folks here that have some experience on using telescopes for longer ranges as most feedback was it's not good for shorter ranges, i.e. 100yds. But looking for feedback still for those with experience with telescopes.

Maybe 30-90x100 is Ok. You can search it on ebay i think

i looked thru a 60x or 80x swarovski the other day. wow... brighter than my konus. i can see the holes but this was still 100yds. i wish the range had at least 200 yds to really see what that swarovski can really do. it was 1k used.

guess i'll plunk down for a scope at costco online. my wife liked the brand. if she didn't give away hers, at least i would have some kind of reference point. i'm still wondering what medium to long distances shooters would use. is a swarovski at 80x good enough? or are there more scopes to choose out there?
