Glock and Aimpoint for HD?

Sorry if this concept has been beat up before. I just finished shooting my Mini14 set up with a Unimak rail and an older Aimpoint 9000SC. It was my first red dot experience and holy cr*p! Out door shooting into a setting sun, dial up the intensity on the red dot, both eyes open and looking only at the target with a big red dot on the bullseye, and boom--tight consistent fast groups at 50 yards. I didn't have time to move thinks out further. Next time. Iron sights seem like stone age to me now. (Yes, I know iron sights don't break, etc. and will always have a place [as a backup!])

Anyway, I am a believer. I wonder if red dots are ready for prime time on defensive handguns? If so, which ones?

Due to the small window and no consistent head alignment with a pistol like you have with a rifle, I find it harder to aquire the dot in the Aimpoint than to aquire the irons.

Kelly McCann runs a Dr. Optic or equivalent on his Glock 19 though. I don't know how he makes it work for him but who am I to question Kelly McCann!

I think a red dot would really be great for taking 100+ yard shots, but that's not exactly "home defense" for most people.

Yes, what he said. Spend that $400-500 dollars on a case of ammo and train with your existing gear. For home defense, the most worthwhile addition would be a set of quality metal Nite Sights (if the gun doesn't already have them).

Or even better yet. Spend half of the Aimpoint money on a quality professional training class from a reputable organization and the rest on ammo.

One of the best in the SoCal area is ITTS. They will teach you skills which will give you better training than many Police Agencies or Mil Orgs provide and ensure that you have the basic knowledge/ skill sets to handle an SD/ HD shooting and survive.

Thanks. All good points. I am reasonably proficient with the iron sights. I guess I was just shocked at how much quicker and accurate I was with the Aimpoint on the Mini. Its really the cats pjs to not look at the front sight, just look at the big red dot on the target. I would not be at all surprised to see red dots evolve into a viable handgun option for carry and HD. But, you are right--practice trumps gadgetry.
