I would say if you want to go the route of getting optics stay away from the knockoff eotech and aimpoints and save up for the real thing they are much better and will last much longer.

But i also think you should work at being good with the iron sights for awhile before you get any optics but thats just personnal opinion.

I would say you should figure out what you are going to use it for like Carbine classes or just range shoooting and SHTF type stuff.

For reddots i like Eotech alot but i have never used an aimpoint and have only heard good things about them.

I hope some of this helps.

        As stated above..
Iron sights wont fail.Ever. They dont have batteries to die, electronics to fail or be tempermental...Get very proficient with your irons..From 25 yards out to 300 plus..THEN go get yourself some optics..If you feel the need..Dont get sucked into the "tacti-cool" wasted money pit..Theres absolutely nothing wrong with an ar with irons..DONT buy the knockoffs though..Thats just a waste of money from the word go.
        Embrace the suck.

"If anything worthwhile comes of this tragedy, it should be the realization by every citizen that often the only thing that stands between them and losing everything they hold dear... is the man wearing a badge" -Ronald Reagan speaking of the newhall incident in 1970.

Irons then try and decide what ranges you'll be using your rifle at. That will help dictate your optics if you choose to buy optics.

Red-dots aren't much better than Irons, given the lack of magnification.

If you're eyes are over 50 like mine, a 4X fixed power is nice to have. (Hell I can hardly SEE the target at 300yds. Damned aging...)

But yeah, at least get your Irons sighted in - just in case something rotten happens to whatever you end up using....
