red dot trouble

OK here we go. I have a BSA pano- holographic sight. It is mounted on a Daniel defense 1 o'clock rail (11 oclock- I'm southpaw) on my AR. I have had the hardest time sighting it in and I am becoming very frustrated. It is veeery inconsistent to the point where I was just trembling with frustration. I was all ready to throw the thing a way and mount something else on my rail when I started thinking... Since there is no back up sight for the optics, could the inconsistency in the angle that I look through the sight be the reason for my trouble? ( I am a decent shot so I don't think that is a factor). Would it work if I bought a back up iron sight and mounted it on another 1 o'clock rail to have a consistent hole to get the red dot consistently lined up? any other suggestions? Help!

Are you aware that this sight has a setscrew on the side which locks down the elevation?
If you adjusted the elevation without loosening this setscrew, you may have stripped the fine thread on the elevation screw and every time you shoot, the recoil will cause the sight to move.
