Texas Weapon System AK Rail Installed

So I pulled the trigger on one of these, which is not quite as nice as the Krebs Custom model, but far more affordable:

Installation was a snap and it has a little flip-up rear sight. The Millet DMS 1-4x seems like a good fit, with LaRue QD rings.
I'll remove the barrel-mounted rail bit and then see how it performs this weekend!

I have been looking at the different rail systems lately. Solar tactical has one that looks identical to the one you just bought.

I have also been looking at the front mounted rail systems such as the Midwest Industries one shown here:

Any thoughts on the strengths vs. weaknesses of one over the other?

Solar Tac sells this same TWS mount, yeah.
I wanted a standard scope as opposed to a forward-mounted red dot, so the MI handguard option, or Ultimak railed gas tube, wasn't quite right for me.

Is that the Dog Leg rail? Seems like a good option for a full scope. Does it really snap back in to zero like they say?

personal poll: How do you like your MM grip?
A CNN reporter, while interviewing a Marine sniper, asked, "What do you feel when you shoot a terrorist?"

          "Recoil."

Well, got out to the range for a test run, sighting in at 50 yards, which was easy. The scope was very quick to get on target and the mount seemed stable. Using 1x and shooting off hand, kneeling, I quickly poked about 20 holes in a group about 5".

I then removed scope from rail, lifted rail, and then remounted it. Seemed to snap right back into place. Next 10 rounds were in about the same group. After going up to 4x, I worked at a target at about 100 yards, from a bench position. Futzed with the scope a bit, but best group was about 4", shooting Brown Bear HPs. I'm sure I can do better with practice, but that was it.

Overall, the complete rig is heavy compared to a standard AK, but that weight might help a bit on the bench. (Also, it's not heavier than my Russian side-rail scope setup. I have one of those as well.) No, not a sniper rifle nor a DMR, but it's an AK. And I was much more consistently on target — and much faster — at longer ranges than I am with irons. (Old eyes, yeah.)

I did not test out the TWS flip-up sight that came mounted to the rail. Was too into the scope. Will have to run another 100 rounds just on that next time —*and take pics. We'll also see how out of zero the it became after a cleaning. If the DMS proves to be too heavy, I'll try a red dot.

Regarding the MM grip, I'm a fan. I have a BB-equipped x39 AR and a Radlocked PSL and they are annoying unless you're just bench shooting and in no hurry. I also have some full-cap mags for the AK, so the decision was easily made.

I went through a carbine course last year with a MM'ed AR and had no problems at all. Would a pistol grip be better? Probably, but it was fine. If you want a rifle that can keep up, get a MM (even if you only have 10-round mags). If you just want a range toy with all the evil features, get a BB. I'm not some former SEAL or Ranger, just a regular shooter, but the choice is pretty obvious. (So why do I have the BB'ed AR? Just because. Everybody wants some evil features once in a while.)

              Great setup.
Are those medium height rings, what brand?
If you move the scope forward a bit so the eyepiece rests in front of the rear iron sight, can you use low rings?

The QD rings are from LaRue: http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetac...tail.bok?no=35
The rear iron sight folds flat and only rises about 1cm above the rail, so low rings may be fine even without moving the scope forward. The rear sight is also easily removable if it's still an issue.
