    Nightforce vs. IOR

Hi, I am trying to purchase a varible magnification scope in the 2-12x range and my budget is around $1200. I am thinking about getting a nightforce compact nxs 2.5-10x32 or a IOR 2-12x32. What do you guys think of these scopes? any help would be great.

    Nightforce: Will work as expected.

IOR: Will break if you look at it funny.

I have personally broken 3 IORs. Two of their FFP scopes and one fixed power.

My Nightforce has been going strong though. That's why I just bought another.

so the ior's are not as sturdily built as the nightforce , or is there a problem at IOR, did warranty help out w those 3 busted IORs?

To say they're not as sturdy is an understatement. I broke my FFP IOR within 150 or so rounds on a 308. The warranty stuff with IOR seems to be improving, but it was really Scott at Liberty Optics that took care of me. You'll find that as you break scopes, you begin to not care about the "lifetime unconditional warranty" as much and you would just prefer that the damn thing didn't break in the first place. When you're out of state on a big hunt that cost you 8,000 dollars, or away at a big match, and your scope goes TU, the warranty doesn't mean much.

My iors have all been great, but I would never buy one of their variable ones. They seem a bit shaky to me. Mine have been the 4X and 6X models with nato and duplex reticles. I still have one of them on an old FN that's chambered in this weird *** 7mm caliber.

For that price range I would buy Leupold.

PS - do you want SFP or FFP? Mil clicks (10 clicks gives one mil, which is ~3 1/2" at 100 yards) or MOA (1/4 MOA is ~1/4")?

good to know, and thank all of you guys for the great feedback. I would like a first focal plane so the reticle isn't set at a specific magnification when ranging, but i have noticed that as feature only found on the higher costing scopes well out of this range. I also have heard that these(FFP) scopes tend to lose zero more easlily and are more delicate, is this true? one thing i like about the nightforce is that i won't have usch a hard time finding 35mm mounts. I like moa beacause it's all in standard measurements (ie inches and yards) but i wouldn't mind a mildot

When my scopes broke, IOR did take care of me.

Fixed power - repaired and sent back.
SH Edition Generation 2 - had it custom rebuilt by IOR. Broke again.

Scott at Liberty Optics took care of me and allowed me to select a Nightforce as a replacement even though he doesn't stock them. He worked out something with CS Gunworks to get me up and running for a competition that was just around the corner at the time.

I personally like SFP scopes because of the constant reticle size. FFP is a definite plus when it comes to competition under stress though. Even then, you can get away with SFP with a little practice.

I wonder if you'll still say this after the bash. I hear its converted many a shooter.

I think i'm stubborn enough to

It's a good thing i've got more guns than I do scopes! I've got a home ready for every scope.

So far it hasn't been a problem.
The holdover shooting we've had to do so far has been far enough away that 15X (or 10X) was managable.
QUICK corrections are done holding off rather than dialing.
Tracking moving targets a few hundred yards away are no big deal when you have an effective brake.. so no need to dial down the mag.

Who knows.. maybe they'll show me the NEED (as opposed to want) for FFP.

Great thing about the bash is that i'll finally get a good nights rest instead of of driving 4 hrs and competing right away.

If you're prone. 15x can be a little much seated, barracade, etc. Its not a big deal most of the time. Its just how much you want to compromise for those few events when its needed.

True that. And if i'm REALLY lucky, i'll find out if it's a disadvantage from a helicopter!

FFP scopes are the way to go. in my opinion. Nightforce FFP scopes have been very reliable. We have the Nightforce FFP with the MLR in stock. Another scope that I like a lot in FFP is the Premier 3-15x50mm and the 5-25x56mm. We have the 3-15x50mm in stock and will have the 5-25x56mm in stock on Tuesday.

holy moly, how come i never heard of the IOR spartan till now. I have a 20in ar10t that im still trying to decide on what scope to get. Was planning on getting a nxs 2.5-10x32 with mil/mil, but this .308 bdc changes the game.
