    What is best scope?

I am buying a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in a .308 win. Will be mainly hunting deer but may occasionally a fox here and there. I am looking for a scope which would be the best for me. Mainly shooting around 200 yards but would like to be able to take a 400 yard shot too. Price range probably up to $600, but would like recommendations for cheaper or better ones.

Isn't varmint and 308 kinda like an oxymoron? I have never seen people enjoy shooting varmints with a 308 before. But what d i know? lol

Anyways back to your question. Is this a beanpole rifle you plan on taking deer in a stand or something you plan on hiking around in the forest doing? If you are doing alot of walking with it then I would recommend a lighter scope in the 3-9 power range. Even at a 200 yard distance I doubt you would want or need more power than a 9x scope. Any of the major lines is well under 600 bucks at that power.

I'm gearing up for Deer season and have a 3x9 Leupold on a Rem 700 in .300 WinMag.............

If it didn't have my Meopta 1x4 mounted on my AR15, I would be using it.....
Great FOV and a true 1x for quick, close-up shots out to 100yds (especially deer) The 4x is perfect out 350-400yds.....Magnification is not a priority with me. Lens and FOV quality is a must.......

Hell, i'm done with 3gun for awhile, I think i just talked my self into swaping scopes........

This is a great one, 2-7 would also work and might be an advantage if you hunt in heavy cover.

I have a 2.5-8X on my hunting 308 but a 3-9X would work fine and you can get usually get that cheaper.

For general hunting, it's hard to beat a 3-9x. The Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 can be had for $250 or so and is excellent.

I picked up a Nikon scope for around 330. Its a 6-18 but they make 3-9s. I usually get Leupolds but I thought I would try out the Nikon. So far, I like it a lot. Crisp sights, it has 1/8 MOA too which I enjoyed. It is on my M1A right now so I know it can take a beating from a 308 round.

The reason I went for a Varmint in a .308 is not to shoot varmint but for the barrel it is the same barrel used in the police model just longer a 26" over the 20". Only problem is stock will be changing to make barrel free floating. But I went ahead and went with a Leupold VX-II 4-12 40mm AO. Was perfect within my price range (picked up for $450) I liked the weight and I was going to go for the 3-9 for $120 less but decided that I will probably use it at x6 most of the time anyways so having the potential for a little extra magny for the bucks was worth it. I am always told to always buy a little nicer scope then expected to not regret in the future. Thanks for your help all.

I would recommend the Leupold Mark 2 also. We have sold a lot of the 3-9x40 but I really like the Mark 2 4-12x40mm, they have a adjustable objective.
