Magnification and yardage question

Ok, to keep things in perspective for buying vs not buying various optics I'm going to ask some noob questions.

< 25 yards would be handgun range? AR's wouldn't need any magnification w/o making it hard to sight in I'm assuming.

<100 yards handguns not recommended (unless you're clint eastwood or rambo). AR 3X works well? Maybe just a red dot 1X sight would suffice?

100-200 yards 5X?

>200?

Obviously there is no "one size fits all" scenario which is why people combine magnification w/ red dot. Am I at least in the general ball park?

the rule of thub ive hear before is 1x/100yd... so basicall 2x for 200, 10x for 1000

if you have varible power sight then you are good near and far...

Also depends on what type of shooting you want to do... trying to punch X rings? or just a zone hits ? you can make hits on a B-26 target out to 300 and in with an non magnified aimpoint zero'd at 25yd knowing your hold offs for wind and elevation.

The first thing to keep in mind with ALL gear selection is that the most critical piece of gear is you. Spend your time training rather than worrying about gear and you will outshoot most people regardless of what optic they're using.
