    Need thoughts on scope

Looking at upgrading scope on a Ruger RPR in 6.5cm. Im just starting to get into long-ish range shooting, around 300/400 and don't think I'll have many chances to go more than 1000 yds. Have it narrowed down to three scopes that are in the same approx price range; Trijicon Tenmile 4.5-30x56, Nightforce NX8 4-32x50 or a Nightforce ATACR 5-25x56. It seems the Trijicon and NX8 are pretty similar. However, between those two, im leaning toward the Trijicon because of the larger 34mm tube and larger objective lens. Then there's the 5-25 ATACR. This one is a few hundred $ more and basically a higher grade scope compared to the first two. However, it only 25x while the other two are 30x & I'm really wanting a higher power scope. I have a 20x NX8 that i like and for this rifle, I know I want a bit more. So, what are your thoughts on those three?? Recommendations?

You might want to consider Schmidt Bender 5-25x56 PM II. I picked up one and its a fantastic scope.

I've been shooting long-range for about a decade with the 6.5 CM. I shoot out to 1,000 yards regularly and have gone as far as one mile. I've been using a 5-25 power scope the entire time. I did try the Nightforce ATACR 7-35 briefly but returned it because I liked my 5-25 more. For what you're doing, you really don't need anything more than 25x. Will more magnification be useful? Sure. Maybe. Depends on your eyes. But it's not really needed for what you're doing.

Of the scopes you mentioned, I would go with the Nightforce 5-25 ATACR. Just make sure it's the first focal plane version. And choose the right reticle for you.

For the price of the Nightforce, though, there are other great scopes you might want to consider as well...

Thanks for suggestion, bonefish. Unfortunately SB, as awesome as they are, is a tad out of my range. Hoping to keep it low to mid $2k.

I appreciate the input. I agree and think the ATACR 5-25 would likely be more than enough. That was exactly my thoughts a few years ago when I opted for a Razor Gen2 3-18 over the 4-27. However, since then I?ve always kinda wished I had a bit more magnification. The 3-18 is what currently sits atop my RPR. Not a bad scope - wonderful glass, like the turrets and the reticle. Had I gotten the 4-27, I highly doubt I?d be looking for a replacement now. So, I?m a little worried I might be ?settling? on a 5-25 scope instead of a 30x power. I mean; is 5x difference in power between 4-30 Trijicon and 5-25 ATACR really that big of a difference? Also, I hear you about FFP. I understand just enough to know that FFP suites me and my application over SFP. As for reticles, my other three scoped rifles are all MOA, so I?m pretty much pot committed to MOA. If I go with a Nightforce option, I may try their newish MOA-XT. Otherwise, standard MOA reticle for me. Would like to hear more about the differences you experienced between the 5-25 and the 7-35.

25x has been the standard in long-range shooting (but not ELR) for a looooong time. You really won't go wrong with a 25-power optic. But if you want more magnification, go for it. The most important thing with a scope, though, is tracking. It must track. Otherwise it's a paperweight.

I've never used a Trijicon or the other Nightforce, so can't comment on them. I've been using Tangent Theta 5-25s and got curious about more magnification, like you. So I bought the Nightforce ATACR 7-35 but I didn't like a lot of the features compared to my TT and didn't think the extra magnification was worth giving up on those. That said, TT now has a 7-35 out and it looks incredible. But I still don't really need to upgrade. The TT 5-25 is probably the best scope in its class on the market today, so I'm not worried. Doesn't really apply to your situation though.

That said, the one you're considering is $3K... not $2K. And for $3K, you can also include a bunch of other nice optics. But the ATACR is a great scope for sure and like I said... of the three you mentioned, I'd pick that one in a heaertbeat.
