If a scope has the reticle in the first focal plane (FFP), the mildot reticle will appear to grow in size, however, it grows in proportion to the rest of the sight picture. In other words, the reticle remains consistent in its miliradian measurements.
With a reticle in the second focal plane (SFP), while objects you are viewing grows or diminishes as you change the magnification, the reticle in view remains unchanged. In other words, its relation to the other objects in view changes.
What all this means is when you use a FFP scope, it doesn't matter what magnification you're using, the mildot reticle will always measure correctly. However, on a SFP scope, the mildot reticle will only measure correctly at one magnification setting.NRA Benefactor Life Member

With a 2nd focal plane scope the mildots will only mil correctly at one magnification(usually at maximum magnification or sometimes at 10X magnification). With FFP you can mil at any magnification. But the real important thing about FFP is that the hold overs will still be the same regardless of magnification.Comment
