Complete Red / green dot Noob

Looking for a red / greendot sight for a 9mm carbine due to worsening eyesight. I have never used or bought one of these before, so I'm probably going to buy one from someone like Sig (found a Romeo sight on amazon) who I'd expect to be dialed in on sights for pistol calibers. there is such a ridiculous amount of info on the web about them, so I thought I'd ask here if there is any reason that this won't serve for shooting between 7 and 50 yards? Also is the 2 or 3 or 5 MOA the SIZE of the dot itself, and should I bother with magnification for these distance?

Magnification is not needed for 7-50 yards. It will only slow you down. The Sig Romeo 5 is an excellent red dot sight, and can be found for around $100-$130. There are many great options on the market, just look for some features you’d prefer. Shake-awake technology is something to consider, as it automatically turns on and off if left alone long enough. The Bushnell TRS-25 is a popular budget red dot ($65) but has a rotary knob that requires manual turn on and off. The size of the dot depends on what you plan to do. The smaller the dot, the more precise you can get. But if you have aging eyes, a bigger dot might serve best. Green has been used lately to maximize battery life when used at high brightness settings. The difference is negligible in comparison to the battery life of each red dot. As some last 15k hours, 25k, 50k+ etc.

For my aging eyes I prefer a circle dot reticle that helps me locate the dot faster without turning the brightness up so high that it affects my astigmatism. The circle dot reticle is a bit harder to find. Eotech at the high end and Holosun at the mid-price point. I have three Holosun 510s.

Do you have astigmatism? Dot optics can have result in a splotch or sparkle ...in essence you may not get a clear, crisp dot. A holographic sight might be the call for you. Do some more research. https://scopesfield.com/best-red-dot...r-astigmatism/


If money were no object, a Acog TA 44 would be what I would try...I have astigmatism, but just deal with it on my dot optics.
