    Aimpoint Comp M4s - Questions.

Aimpoint Comp M4s Red Dot Sight

So I'm having a problem with coyotes on my ranch. I'm actually considering getting an aimpoint, but knowing nothing but iron sights my whole life, it's a bit intimidating and confusing. My biggest problem is the coyotes come at night and are eating my live stock so I'm wondering about night vision. "The CompM4 is optimized for use with all generations of night vision devices, and features an extremely rugged and easy to use 16-position manual switch with 7 night vision compatible settings and 9 daylight settings." So I guess my question is, can someone recommend a NV Magnifier to go with the M4s?

Or should I just get a really good flashlight and forget about night vision? Problem is when ever I run out with a flashlight and rifle, the coyotes run away, and I can't seem to hit them.

      What's your budget?

      Good NV is big money.

      PVS-14 is a good choice.

My biggest issue with rifle mounted NV is that you'll be scanning using the rifle. I think this is horribly unsafe for hunting.

Good night vision is expensive, very expensive. You would probably be better off just chilling out and letting you eyes adjust to the ambient starlight, maybe using the aimpoint at the lowest visible setting.

Night vision comes in various generations, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_vision. As you move toward more current technology the price increases exponentially. Also legal issues pop up when attaching it to a rifle.

Passive night vision is fine on a non-magnified optic.
Passive night vision is fine on a magnified optic.

However active night vision(NV plus an infra red emitter) cannot be attached to a rifle with a magnified optic as it meets the requirements to be a Night Vision Sniper Scope, which is illegal.

Essentially once you attach an infrared emitter to a rifle to which you have a NV scope attached it becomes Illegal. Supposedly if the scope had no magnification or the NV was not mounted to the rifle it would be fine.

I say why not buy a cheap <$500 NV monocular and a cheap scope with an illuminated reticule then go hunting? Maybe set up some infra red lamps around your property to make it easier to see the yotes?
Time spent hunting is not deducted from one's lifespan.

Yea. that confuses me. "using the aimpoint at the lowest visible setting" do you mean that it has illumination inside the optic? Or does it have low level NV itself?
I'm sorry guys for asking "stupid questions" but I have used nothing but iron sights my whole life, and seeing whats available, I want to make sure I know what I'm buying.

The lowest visible levels (not NV) are pretty low - low enough to preserve your night vision.

Olav does have a point - you're perhaps compensating too quickly for a perceived need, when you might be better served with a technique improvement.

With NV, if you not willing to pay for Gen III or better, don't bother. With cheaper NV, the images will wash out before 50 yards ( I have a Gen I NV...absolute crap). Another way to go, is to get infrared/green laser and Gen III+ monocular/cyclops head setup. But be prepared to pay easily thousands of dollars.

                      I would love too.

I used to hunt 'Yotes in Alberta on a farm because they would predate on our sheep.

We would have to sit, all night sometimes, and just simply wait for them to show up. Then shoot them.

We would set up the circumstances as best as possible though...

Perhaps I miss understood the intentions of the short comment. I'm used to getting crap all over the net especially on the Nevada forums for being form CA. I just figured I was getting crap for being on cal guns while in Nevada.

I apologize for getting my panties in a wad. I wasn't aware that you are an experienced hunter. I'm startling to come to the conclusion that I should just set up a tent on a full mood night and wait. Learning how to hunt, I'm realizing is exactly what I need to do. For example: When I get my first shot, I can hit one. But what do I do about the others that take off? Just wait each night for them to return, and take them out one by one? Anyone got any good links I can read?

just a heads up i know down south we used to hunt coyotes, try a spotlight or your flashlight. take some window stain or some other type of clear red paint (heard even red saran wrap works) over the light. the lens filter will stop the white light from scaring them, all you have to do is look for the glowing eyes. i think red eyes = yote, green eyes = rabbit. that might be a decent alternative to the night vision.
