    Unertl scope?

just picked up an old sporter that came with a weird old scope on it. i know some Unertls are highly sought after but i don't know much about them. i know this would be much better with pics, but i'm without means to do so right now. anyhow, it looks to be about a 4x, with very fine crosshairs, marked J. Unertl. any rough idea if this thing is worth a damn? thanks for any info.

You should certainly keep it. I don't know what it would be worth though.

Sounds like the Unertl Hawk. I have seen them go for $50 to $100 depending on condition.

yes, it is a hawk, it was still in my car and i hadn't looked at it closely. optics aren't all that hot so i probably won't put it back on the rifle. i just know the name and that some people like unertls so i figured i'd throw it out there. perhaps i'll hang on to it and build a period sporter out of one of my sporters, lol. hmmm, which one though...

what you have is not the highly sought after unertl's, which are the long skinny ones with the springs around the tube and a bunch of rings and adjustments outside of the scope. the hawks are the ones with the internal adjustments, with little collector values. they are ok but you will probably do better with a newer scope with much brighter coatings for under 100 bucks.

pretty much what i thought, might look good on an old sporter but not be worth crap otherwise. figured if i could get some cash for it it'd offset some of the cost of the rifles i bought that it came with. oh well, thanks for the info.
