    opinion on NcStar

    hello all,
i just picked one of these up. (real cheap) and was wondering what your opinion of these are. any comments particularly from ppl who own them..

i was just wondering about performance. does it hold zero well? how is the bullet drop compensation? once removed (via the built in quick release mount) and replaced on the rifle, does it return to it's point of origion?

i only ask because this is my first AR build and have no experience with this type of optics.

thanks in advance for the opinions!

I have one. I have used it for only 200 rounds but it has done really well. One day it was -15 degrees and it still held zero. I don't think I am the best source. I am sure someone will chime in saying, "you get what you pay for."

      That will be me.

I have owned several since I wanted to give the brand a chance. Two that I received were defective right out of the box. The others failed in a short time in usage on my wife's .22 and an AR. Some guys have had good luck with them but IMO, they are junk and will never reside on any of my weapons again, ever.

I had one on an AR that I sold. It went fine for me, held zero, never had a problem with it.

I have the same mini-scope on my rifle.

            Problems...

            All mounting screws were loose.
Friction Lock needed adjustment to mount on AR flat-top.

Once those problems were corrected I haven't had any problems with the scope. The crosshairs are thick and the illuminated reticle (both) are very bright even on the lowest setting. But that hasn't affected the use of the scope. The adjustable ocular lens is a very nice feature.

The BDC isn't perfect but will allow hits on a man size target out to 400 yards. I have used the scope for close targets (25 yards) and then adjusted for a 100 yard zero and it has always held zero's.

I have heard of people having problems with this scope as well as other types but with me, no problems.

Remember, this is a $125.00 scope not a $1000-$2000 scope so I never expected it to hold up to any high price standard but it has worked under some very hard conditions (rain/snow/wind/dust (a lot of dust) that many of the high priced scope users wouldn't take their scope into.

For what it is, and how I use it it has held up very well and I believe it's a good deal for the price. Oh, let me add that some folks that have had problems with NC Star are not talking about "this" scope, they group all the NC Star scopes together, if one's bad they're all bad.

Okay. My brother just dropped the scope on a rock on accident and it is still holding its zero. I shot 3 gophers after it was dropped and is doing great. It even has a dent in the top hood on the front. I will post a pic soon. If it can handle a drop on a rock, I am pretty sure it can handle a range.

                They make great targets....

Seriously, I never could understand when people put a $100 scope on a $1000 rifle. Spend at least the same amount on your optics than you spend on your rifle.

                  Small correction:

That's how much I paid for my NC Star 2.5X handgun scope: $35. It's mounted on my Puma 92 lever gun in a scout configuration. My Puma 92 is .454 Casull, and I only shoot my reloads. My 454 reloads are the hot variety, not exactly the "play it safe" commercial ammo you buy at the gun store. In fact, a 300 grain 45 caliber bullet pushed by 30 grain of Win 296 powder is leaving the barrel at 2100 fps and has about the same muzzle energy as a medium loaded 30-06 Springfield - only this one it is being shot from a carbine less than 1/2 the weight of a M1 Garand rifle. That's a lot of punishment for the cheap piece of glass that sits on top.
I purchased the scope two years ago with the idea that if it breaks, I can send it back anytime and they'll replace it - it has a lifetime warranty and the NCStar headquarters are less than 15 miles away from my home. But the darn thing refuses to break, even after shooting hundreds of .454 Casull rounds. I must say I would refused to believe this if somebody would have told me beforehand.
I must be one of the lucky ones.

The scope pictured does what I ask it to do. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you want to buy a scope that cost the same as the rifle, that's okay. But it's not necessary for you to understand why I don't want to.

Take all NC Star optics and give them to the enemy. They will never be able to hit you.
All joking aside, don't put and NC Star optic on any gun you paid money for.
There are much better options in the same price range.

Are you really sure of that? I think you're lucky don't have many enemies and shooting people is generally considered illegal. Otherwise you may have to reconsider my ability to hit a human sized target at 150 yards with a $35 worth of NC Star scoped .454 Puma 92 carbine.

Yes, the junk scope that helped me punch these holes in the paper is still as good as new after several hundred fired rounds.

                            Haha. That's funny because I put a $100 scope on a $2500 rifle.

Can't ask for more than that. And if it breaks, probably the shipping fee to send it for warranty repair probably costs more than the sight itself!
