red dot or LPVO on my new Henry

I just picked up a new Henry Big Boy in .44 and with my eyes I would prefer a red dot or smaller scope. I am looking for suggestions on which one and whether I need a rail or can I directly mount something to the three holes on the receiver or by the rear sight. I have a vortex 1-4 scope but not sure if that would work.

    Thanks in advance..

pretty sure you'll want to mount a rail, and then the optic.

What are you using the rifle for?

Red dots will give you faster target acquisition and better vision. The LPVO will take you out past 100 yards and likely further than the .44 is capable of.

Henry sells a mounting plate for the Leupold Deltapoint Pro. I had this on my Henry rifle before I sold the rifle. I thought it looked pretty good and it worked well. Here are two pictures of the rifle I used to own. Also a link to the mounting plate. And a link to the Hill People Gear lever light mount (looks like a different version than what I used to have. I don't know the range of a 44 magnum rifle but a red dot works well out to about 150 yards on a steel plate.

Fits Henry Series H006, H012, H009, H010, H018, H023, H024 and H027 Series guns. The Skinner Sights DeltaPoint Pro mounting plate is a custom-made steel plate for specific firearms, that replaces the firearm's rear sight. It allows for the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro red dot sight to be mounted directly to the plate, creating an ultra-low profile mount that offers a lower bore axis for easier aiming and potential co-witnessing with front sights, while also being stronger than the sight itself.
