    Rings for Precision flattop AR

    Greetings,

I built a precision flattop AR - 24" WOA upper, Magpul PRS stock. I'll probably put a Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5x16x42 scope on it (no iron sights). Any idea what height rings I'll need? MOA? Recommendations for brands are also appreciated. Looking for something mid-range, best bang for the buck, but not overboard $$$-wise.

    Thanks!

Typically you will need high to extra high rings (manufacturers vary) + there are some personal preference and fit issues. IIRC most folks end up with the center of the glass at about 1.5" above the rail. This is slightly higher than normal iron sights.

A good trick is to take some wood blocks or similar material and use various thiknesses under the scope to see what feels and works best for you. Measure the distance and then seek out rings that match that height. Keep in mind also the some manufactures indicate height differently from others (eg. from top of rail to bottom of ring vs. center of ring).

Most rings in AR heights are called ultra high, super high, or similar, but the important thing is the centerline height, as Cazach says.

Also, many people find rings on the flattop don't put the scope far enough forward for good eye relief, depending on what stock you use and how you shoot. Lots of people use one-piece mounts with some forward offset to help with this.

Here's the Big List of AR15 one-piece mounts, including sections on rings and extended rails:

Best bets for AR mounts in general (individual preferences will vary, as always):
Under $50 - CAA DVSR, but needs full circle adapter rings with a 1" scope
Under $100 - Burris PEPR - not easy to find in stock right now
Under $150 - GG&G FLT wrench mount, JP Rifles mount
Over $150 - LaRue, ADM, GG&G, Bobro - lots more choices

If you don't mind spending $200-ish, it's hard to go wrong with LaRue or ADM.
