    Spotting Scope

Ok looking for a recommendation for a 20-60x minimum spotting scope in the $200-300 dollar range. Any input from those that are using one in that price range?

    Thanks in advance,

I found a Tasco on sale at Big 5 this week for $89. It's a 20x60, 60mm, and should do better than my Leupold 25x50 for the range. On sale through tomorrow.

I was hesitant to get it, but after getting it home, it doesn't look half bad for the price.

Thanks for the input. Let me know how it works once you get it to the range...would be interested to see it compared to your Leupold.

The Leupold is a single power, 25x, with a 50mm objective. But I got it years ago for almost nothing, used. The Tasco is cheap, but it should be good enough to see holes in the paper at 100 yards.

I was looking at that 80mm KONUS for $199 at jarheadtop.com. It seems people love that thing and supposedly it compares well to a Kowa.

I have a Simmons Blazer from Walmart. 20-60x60mm. It's clear and bright.
I bought on the recommendation from a fellow Calgunner.

I got an email from Creedmor on this Kowa special. Great price.

I got this one at Big-5, I'm not sure if I like it or not, at over 50 magnification I can see a purple outline when looking at stuff.

It was $130 after tax marked down $110 from reg price. I'm not sure if I should keep it or not. I would imagine I could see holes in paper fine at 100 yards, but I do like quality. Just not willing to pay over $200 for a scope. Anything better for $200?

There seem to be a ton of scopes in the same price range, from about $100-300. Simmons, Barska, Tasco, Bushnell, Yukon, etc. Lot's of names I've never heard of. I just don't think you're going to find top quality at an entry level price. If you're not happy with it now, you probably won't begin to love it after time. Best bet is to find one you like, then watch for it on sale.
Most if not all of this level of scope is made in China, just like mine. While I sometimes feel it's like tossing money in the toilet, it gives me time for a bit of research to find what I'd REALLY like to get. And the Tasco will cost $10 to fix in the next year if I need to send it in. For my intended use at the 100 yard range, it should do fine. But if I were a nature lover or bird watcher, I'd have to get something much better.

For the price I think I'll stick with the optics mentioned at jarheadtop for only $199. It's an 80mm with glass comparable to higher end.

                      Link?

                      is it this one?

If so I think ill stick with my Barska because I like the ability to zoom out to 12x. If I went with the Konus or other spotting scope though, would I have to re-adjust the focus as I change the zoom? I did notice I have to do this with the Barska, and there is a slight pinkish/purpleish hue on the edges of objects at full power. However I don't think I would have any issues seeing holes in targets at 100+ meters.

Go with the Konus Konuspot 80.

It's good.. but not Kowa good like somebody said.

you know, I think I will return mine for that.

How does the tripod attached to the Konus Konuspot 80? It looks like it needs to use a special ring and that spells problems for me since I want to use my own carbon fiber tripod....

Is there a threaded hole in it like other spotting scopes such that it has attached to a regular tripod?

Also, will this allow me to attach my SLR to the spotting scope? That would be pretty neat.

Ok I hope this deserves some Bumpage.

Ended up getting the Konus 80 + a Photo Adapter for my Digital SLR from B&H Photo. The Konus Konuspot-80 was $170 + $10 shipping (No Tax). I returned the Barska to big 5 where they had them on the shelf for $230 (As well as another brand "RUGGED" which appeared to be identical!)...

Heres how to get the deal if anyone is looking.

                            www.live.com / www.bing.com
                            Search For Konus 7120
B&H Link will be at the top.
When you click the link it will say the Scope is $219.
Add it to card and you will see a pleasant surprise! Price drops to $169!

If you have an SLR camera, B&H has the Photo Adapter ring as well! I hope this is a good setup!
