Acog on SA Loaded M1A?

I goto Burro canyon quite regularly and shoot at 200 yards, other than that I may goto BLM once or twice a year to shoot at extended ranges-

I would like to possibly use it for a long(ish) range class as well

Would it be worth putting an Acog on a Loaded version of an M1A or what budget glass would some of you suggest? I have the cash for Nightforce but would love to spread the money out rather than tie it all up on one thing..

As it sits in the safe it has a:
Walnut stock,
sadlak scope mount,
smith enterprise coastguard brake, bradley cheek rest.

Also what is the best way to put a sling on an M1A? Paracord attachment points around the grip and barrel?

I don't know anything about the M1A and what's compatible, but from the sound of it, a halfway-decent LPVO might be a better thing for your case.

1-4x or even a 1-6x, Vortex Viper PST or similar should be good enough for all the ranges you talk about and let you shoot up close too, all without blowing a massive load of cash.

I shoot to 400 yards max and see no reason or benefit to using an ACOG on a full length M1A. I use ta11 and ta33's on 3 AR's only and everything stays light/handy.

I shoot my M1A's to the same distance without any scope or electronic sights. That's my wheelhouse for pranging steel plates.

*Once you top your rifle with glass du jour you're looking at 14 - 15lb loaded package.


*When it comes to glass I suggest anything that has Japanese or German/eastern European glass in it. No wet market ChiCom junk.

The sling goes on the sling swivels, which are on the stock. You NEVER attach a sling to a barrel.

IMO if OP is gonna pack the thing around you will enjoy a good adjustable sling with some padding on it. Your shoulders won't mutiny on you. They will gripe, but that's normal.

I do not believe the necessary height and eye relief the ACOG requires would work well on a standard M14 stock. You can get a strap on riser but the ACOG is not ideal. Ideal is the front and rear sights which are a mile apart. If you have good or corrective vision, master the aforementioned first then get into some glass. The M1A will shoot as far as you can see, however far that is.

Corrective shooting glasses keep me competitive at 600yds.

If scoping your M1A is the plan, a LPVO or even 2-10X would fit better than the ACOG. You can't go wrong with a fixed power SWFA SS 10x either.

I personally wouldn’t put an acog ta31 on an m1a. Not enough eye relief for the application. Acogs are designed for a very specific use.

I have the Smith enterprise mount with a 5 x 22 x 56 Nightforce. Plus a standard muzzle brake which really tames it down. I also bought a Smith ent front sight with a 5/8 x 24 thread for the muzzle brake
