Lap your new rings so that they are nice and smooth. They will make better contact with the tube, and, if properly torqued, there should be no marring on the tube.

There are tons of good videos on ring lapping, and scope mounting. You could also have a knowledgeable friend help you out.

      Enjoy your new scope!

Just thinking about your idea, I am not sure it would work well. The glue on the tape will soften when it gets warm and possibly allow the scope to move slightly under recoil. Secondly, that goop would be messy to remove if that was ever needed.

As I mentioned in my post above, metal to metal contact between the rings and the tube would be best, I think, assuming the rings are smooth and properly torqued.

I am curious as to what others have to say about the OP's question.

Spuhr recommends rosin to help with this. I'd either do that or lap rings. Getting quality rings will almost eliminate this issue but some marring is impossible to eliminate.
Do NOT put electrical tape or anything else between your scope and rings.

Do the same thing with a new optic as I do a new truck. Use a screw driver to put the first scratch. Done and over...

I use silk ribbons of appropriate width, glued to the rings with contact cement.
Seems to work well for the last 30+ years

Use good rings and make sure your rings are actually in line. If you're using a two-piece base for the rings, then this is when you're going to be need to lap. Ideally, you should switch to a quality one-piece base to mitigate impact of misaligned receiver holes.

Or you can use those Burris rings with the nylon shims (assuming they still make those; haven't touched those in 15+ years).

Marred cope = Bad mount/rings. I have never seen a need to worry about this.
Maybe a guy could use Teflon tape and a lick of spit to get one turn on the tube.

Thread locker and torqued fasteners is all I do to marry the optics to my rifles. Torqued in proper sequence.

The things people worry about amaze me.
