    Scope sighting problem...Elevation.

Hi first post and hope I'm in the right place and not asking a stupid question.

I have a VEPR 7.62x54r. I purchased a Vortex Diamondback 6-24x50 EBR-2C MOA, a Midwest Industries Gen 2 AKSMG2-R QD mount and Vortex Pro rings in both Extra high and high. The problem is bore sighting. I'm using a laser tool at about 30 yards. I can't get enough UP elevation to put the cross hairs on the laser dot. I initially mounted the Extra high rings and it was worse. Then mounted the high rings, that helped and the scope bell is about 1/32 above the rear iron sight. I did a lot of internet research and people mentioned shimming the scope. I wondered if it is possible to shim the rail where it mounts to the QD. Do I have the wrong combination of parts? As you can tell I have a lot to learn. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Set up a target at 10 yards and shoot it, adjust to get it close, then move to the desired zero distance.

Boresighters are only to get you close. Pull the boresighter out and rotate it any number of degrees and watch the dot move. They are almost useless.

Unless you want your final zero to be at 30yds, you don’t want your reticle to be on the dot at that distance. With an AR & a 25 yd initial sighting, you’d want the impacts to be about 1.5 to 2 inches low to get a close 100 yd zero. I’m guessing your VEPR has similar over-boreline dimensions.

And as others mentioned those boresighters are not exactly precision instruments.

Take a look at Burris Signature rings, they have plastic inserts kits that can add elevation to your scope and still have reticle close to the center.

          Scope sighting problem...Elevation

Thanks for the responses. When trying to bore sight, I have the UP adjustment maxed out. I want to have some elevation adjustment when it's sighted in at 100 yrds. I have used this bore sight tool on other rifles without a problem. I just to make sure I am on paper. Does anyone know of a scope person I could take it to in the San Francisco Bay area? I am more than willing to travel and pay to get this issue resolved. I will take a look at the Burris rings. Thanks again

Height over bore/sight height is what the OP is ignoring.

That rifle/caliber should print low @30yds.

Get on paper @30 with a "friggin laser"? Sure can but zero it at 100yds.

Go back and fix the elevation before you proceed. Max clicks up and count the clicks to max down and divide by 2 to start.
