    optic adjustment???

SO i did some shooting today. I put a vintage Leupold 4x scope on my ruger mark ii target competition pistol and ran out of adjustment for height and windage before i could get it zero-ed and i dont know why? Any one has an idea of what i should check for?I used a ruger base and ruger rings i had laying around. Could the base be the culprit?
    thanks

    Probably need the rings lapped.

My Leupold scope has a 'Zero' set notch on the rim of the turret dials.

Remove the turret cap and look for a small notch/slot on the rim. Use a small, flat blade screw driver to move the slot to the "Zero" numeral on each dial.

I believe doing this resets the reticle adjustment as if no clicks have been done. You should then use a rest to zero the scope.

Other than that, my only other suggestion would be to give Leupold a call and see what they have to say.

Lapping the rings, and torque-ing them to spec before fine tuning your zero will help quite a bit.

Did you shoot from the rest? Are you sure it is the gun/scope and not you?

Yes to both. Peston, i called Leupold, the silver rings dont do anything when moving them. It was explained by tech you have to put the scope up to a mirror and you will see a grey crosshair, you then line up the grey crosshair with the black crosshair with turret screws and then the scope is factory zero. In fact i decided i like to shoot the mark ii with iron sights. I reinstalled the leupold on my excel 22 mag pistol. I will see if it zero's on that gun. The remington xp-100 it was previously on zero'ed perfectly, so i am leaning to the rings as being the issue.

That's very interesting. Thanks for checking on it. I will certainly keep this trick in mind, should the need arise.

After reading your note, I assume that the 'zero notch' I mentioned, just gives a reference to the last 'zero' in case one needs to deviate from that point.

            Thanks again.

I am a big ruger fan but their rings? Not so much, I hate the way they make them different heights for the same weapon and none of them are ever stamped. I also really hate the way they clamp on to their bases as well. You are better off with the cheap Baska rings for ruger. Plus the fact they are 3 times the price of other rings for a crappy fit.

                    Im late to the party-

My suggestion was going to involve a rest and removing the bolt

                    Remove the bolt-
Set the pistol in a rest and find a target in the yard or where ever you get a long distance. Set up a target on a fence or a wall. The target can be a sticker, knot in the fence or any static aiming point.

Sight down the bore and get the bore on the target

Then set the scope in the bottom of the rings.

                    Is it aligned or off?

Can the rings or base be flipped 180 degrees?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                    (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

That's some great info right there. Thank you for sharing.
