    Secondary optic on a levergun?

    Howdy!

I had a bit of a snag in the beginning with my Marlin 1895, but after 500 more rounds through it, it hasn't blown up on me!

I ended up using a Leupold Mark Ar Mod 1 3-9x40 on my venerable Marlin, I will eventually get custom turrets. It's working great in the 100 yard range with the gummy tipped Hornady shells.

I can't really use the iron sights anymore due to the scope but I would like to have an RDS mounted "just in case" something sneaks up on me.

I know it's impure, tacticool and ugly, and not many guys' cup of tea at all, but it seems like it would be functional. I have a Nikon spur laying around that I thought I could mount to the MLok rail.

Anyone using a similar setup or have any recommendations for a levergun that might be used for hunting and protection?

    Thanks!

I would suggest a different strategy. Put an illuminated 1-4x24 on it. That way you don't need a red dot since you'll have a variable with 1x. The scope will also have an etched reticle, so it still works if the battery goes dead. Use QD rings to quickly switch to your irons if you manage to somehow break the scope glass.

The 45-70 is a short range hunting cartridge. It doesn't need more than 4x magnification.

I have a very nice leupold for my Winnie, but I don't use it much cuz of the weight...and the scope is considered a light one. An RDS on a lever gun should work just fine, but in addition to a scope you are just adding unnecessary weight in my opinion.
