Handgun scope/red dot help advice.

The most important issue to expect with a magnified sight enhancement for a handgun is they are designed for extended eye relief. So obviously at arms length or there about.
I have found they are difficult to use unsupported. That they are best used off some shooting sticks or rested on something. If you have a scope off a rifle you can try holding that up using just your hands and set on 4X to get an idea how easy or difficult it is to hold steady enough.
I have taken pig with a handgun. But it was using open sights.
You know the style of hunting you will do. If out walking and not setting up over a known area for them a mini holo/red dot or other non magnified sight enhancement is faster but like anything beyond open sights requires a little time behind the sight.
You can easily practice practical techniques by going out shooting and see what you can achieve with accuracy in a non hunting environment.
Practice first rested and at reasonable engagement distances. Get an idea of how well you can shoot from a rest and at what distances.
Then try standing off hand, kneeling or squatting.
I would absolutely use a scope if I knew I would be shooting from a rested position and had time.
A red dot if out in the field and I am confident I know where the point of impact and the sight are zeroed to.
Open sights if I expect to be close and under 25 yards. I want to have as wide of a viewable images as I can.
Good luck. -
Extremely helpful, thanks! I hadn’t considered that the scope would be hard to hold steady... I think I’ll bolt the red dot on first and try it, see how that goes... doubt I’ll be shooting off sticks or the like.sigpic"That's more suspicious than a nun doing squats in a cucumber field!"Comment
