GP 100 357 magnum with pistol mounted light

I might get laughed at for asking this. I am thinking of having a gunsmith jerry rig a picatinny rail for my Ruger GP 100 so I can mount a pistol light. How much would this cost? And do you guys know any good gunsmith around San Jose CA?

No experience with it but it might be cheaper.

It is not in the correct location. It needs to be attached to the trigger guard where you can control it.

Unless it is your only handgun, I wouldn't do it.

If it is your only handgun, I still wouldn't do it.

Although the advent of rails have outdated the need to do so, it isn't hard to learn to shoot with a small flashlight in your weak hand while still using it to support the weapon.

Bobby aside from cost and making the GP 100 ugly what are the disadvantages of mounting a weapon light on it? Its mainly a home defense gun, i am not holstering it. My 2nd and final gun purchase is a Glock 20sf that is mainly my range gun, reading posts regarding the chances of the magazine springs going bad for keeping them loaded for a long time prevent me from using this as my home defense gun. Im sorry im a newbie

You are mistaken about the magazine springs going bad. That would take many many years of being fully loaded. I just took two Glocks to the range after 7 years of being loaded - perfect functioning. Even so, it's a good idea to change magazines every couple of years.

Magazine springs do NOT "go bad" if compressed...but it's a great ongoing internet myth.

The glock would be easier to mount a light and easier to reload in any scenario.

Do not worry anout the springs, this is an old debate and the consensus is that repeated loading and unlaoding is hard on springs, but leaving a magazine loaded does not.

I have self defense magazines that have been loaded, other than function checks and firing the self defense ammo, for decades.

AR mags ($10 mil contract variety) have been shown to shoot fine after 20+ years of being loaded in a footlocker or similar forgotten storage.

The magazine spring fable was written by the same guy who first declared that the M1 Garand's ejecting enbloc could be heard 500 yards away by the enemy over the din of battle.

It is a fair question and I don't mean to sound critical. It would just be the ruining of a great handgun. Additionally, the Glock 20 is a much better candidate for HD purposes and would need no permanent modifications to add a light.

You are fine Bobby did not sound critical at all and I totally agree I realized I dont want to make the GP 100 into some sort of Frankenstein. God Bless!
