    Thoughts on the Vortex Ranger?

I believe it is a rebranded version of the Viper PST gen 1 1-4x24

I am looking for a decent scope for my AR and didn't want to spent a ton of money. I found this one on sale for 300 at midway and I didn't know if its worth the money. I know it's not a trijicon but is it worth the money? I am clueless in regards to magnified optics.

This is the link to what I am looking at.

Yes I think that's a good buy. The Strike Eagle is around $400-$500, IIRC and your not gaining that much more. Plus it's still a Vortex and you know if anything ever happens they'll fix it or replace it.

Excellent deal. Used Gen 1 1-4 PST's go for more than that when they appear on ebay. LPVO in the 1-4/1-5 range are great for 200-300 yard and in hunting

I had a 1-4 Viper pst gen1 with closed caps and it was lightweight and clear. I replaced it with a 1-8 gen2 Strike Eagle and regretted it. IMO, the Gen1 PST was clearer @ 4x, had less 1x edge distortion than the gen2 Strike Eagle, and a bigger eye box. If the Ranger is the same as the gen 1 Viper PST, then it is a good scope, if you are OK with 1-4x. I ended up getting a Burris RT-6 on sale and very happy with it.

I've got a Vortex Ranger and a PST 1-4 MOA

I just mounted it this month on my back-up upper and haven't zeroed it yet.

I have been using my Vortex PST 1-4 on my service rifle for Across the Course (200, 300, & 600 yds) Highpower shooting. I've even had reasonable performance out to 1000 yds at the 29 Palms Regional late last year. I was one of two shooter with an AR at 1K. But that's another story.

I unboxed and mounted my Ranger. It is identical in all respects to my PST, except for the package graphics, the labeling on the side of the scope, and the name on the manuals.

Side by side they are identical. The PST is serving me well and I am confident that the Ranger will do the same.

I'll be damned. That's less $ than what I paid for the same Viper scope
radically reduced on eBay about a year ago.

The glass is very nice. FYI, the center dot is 1 MOA if I recall (at 4x). Just something handy to know.
