Help me choose a scope

That will work well or the VX3i in 3.5X10X40. You do not need more power and I would only use a Leupold on a hunting firearm.
I would use a non-AO scope with a duplex reticle and sight it 2.75" high at 100 yards. Then hold on the animal and you will have meat in the freezer. Thai has worked well for me for many years.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

OP what and where will you hunt?
DnH above is right that you won't need more power than 10x, for 95%+ of game shooting done in the US. For new hunters, make that 99.999%.
A 4-12x or 3-15x would be OK too, but don't go higher than that.
Leupolds are relatively light. A very good thing.Comment

Sorry , forgot to mention I’ll be hunting in California. Mostly mountains and would not want to really take a shot past 500 yards.Comment

3-9x is ideal IMO. Larger magnification is ok, but you'll trade size, weight, cost, and clarity for some extra zoom.
I've really grown fond of scopes with miliradian adjustments and reticle. I used to do MOA, but 10cm at 100 meters is just too easy. Once you learn it you'll be able to accurately range your target further saving you weight when you leave the laser range-finder at home.
Ohh and rings, Warne. That's all I use on all my rifles. Sure there are more expensive mounts out there, but Warne rings have never let me down ever. They are aluminum so lighter than steel, corrosion resistant, and tend to absorb harmonics better.Last edited by ChuckDizzle; 12-25-2018, 2:32 PM.Comment

500 yds is a long shot for paper. 300 yds is like a mile for deer.
The scopes listed above are all you want.Comment
