Help with spotting scopes

Looking at getting spotting scope to assist me with target shooting and trying to decide between two models...

1. Vortex Viper HD (2018) Spotting Scope 20-60x85 $900
2. Vortex Razor HD 22-48x65 $1200

I will be target shooting 223 & 308 from 100 to 300 yards almost exclusively. My goal is to be be able to see holes in paper at these distances.

I understand these two spotting scopes are in two different classes. I have positive esperience with Vortex and want to stick with this brand for a spotting scope.

The thing I dont know is the additional magnification of the Viper needed over the better optical quality of the Razor at my desired distance? Also, at my range of 100 to 300 yards, will a smaller magnifcation of 48x and smaller objective diameter of 65 be sufficient to see 223 and 308 holes at 100 to 300 yards?

I wish i could swing Razor 27-60x85 but cost is too high at this time.

The Vortex Viper HD (2018) Spotting Scope 20-60x85 would be plenty sufficient overall for your requirements though .223 sized holes would be more difficult but not impossible at 300 yards with either of those two spotting scopes. Check out the Pentax 20-60x80. It's better than the Vortex. Some say it's the equal of a Zeiss or Swarovski at no where near the cost.

Something to think about from my experience personally, straight see through is fine if it's bench mounted, if not angled is definitely better.

When it comes to cheaper but higher magnification vs better glass with lower magnification, I would always choose the better glass.
