    Red Dot Advice

    > moderately small in size (but with optic sufficiently sized to be readily usable)
    > light weight
    > durable and of good quality (premium quality is not necessary)
    > Picatiny QD mount included would be a big plus, but if a QD mount was readily available from another company that might be doable.
    > If you have one for sale and can meet in OC that could be of interest.

What is this going on? AR? handgun? 10/22?

        Budget?

Based off the info you gave so far, I would look at a Holosun

            Quick Answers

A few quick answers to the follow-up questions.

The budget "sweet zone" is $200, but I am easily enticed to spend more. It goes on a 17 HMR so say roughly a 22 for general purposes (but since its QD mount it could find its way to 12 guage on occasion). The big things are small size, durability and a picatiny QD mount included with the unit or readily available.

Fast FireIII would work, but I want to try a Nikon Spur.

The Vortex Crossfire RD-1 is pretty damn good for the price. It works with Aimpoint Micro mounts, like the LT660-QD... so I'm sure you can find loads of low QD mounts to use with it. it comes with a low mounts and an AR height... AR height mount is installed IIRC. Not QD mounts but you could mount and shoot it at least. Mine is on a .22 right now, but I have had it on a Ruger PC Carbine where it was faster for me to pickup the dot than a FastfireIII.

I saw the Nikon Spur yesterday in a magazine and I agree, it is interesting. I'm going to try to pick one up today if I can find it. I've been mobile for the last couple of days but I go under the knife again in about a week. Then I'm on lock down for awhile until the surgeon lets me drive again. So I have just a few days to accomplish a lot.

I have some Vortex products. They're good, but a little on the heavy side. But for sure I'll check out the RD-1. My guess is that the hardest part will be finding the mounts. I live in OC. I'll be trying to hit Ammo Bros. today and maybe Fowler's again.

                        Nikon Spur

Nikon's Spur is a viable option but you will need a riser. There are a lot of QD riser's available for under $50 but, IMHO, spending more will get you a better and more consistent lockup. Nikon also has their new SuperDot Reddot sight out. Would be great for your picatinny rail and right in your budget. Check with some of this sites sponsors to see if they can help you out! I'm a big fan of the .17HMR. The 2 I have are very accurate and I have taken coyotes and armadilloes out to 150 yards. That being said, why wouldn't you want to get the most out of your rifle by using a magnified optic? You might have trouble finding a SuperDot since they are so new but from what I heard, the sub-$200 price have them flying off the shelves. Drop me a note if I can answer any of your Nikon related questions. I haven't put any rounds under one of these new optic's but hopefully soon.

True, Holosun has various models that come with a QD mount, even non-solar models like the 403, 510, 515, etc...

                            Nikon Spur

I checked the SPUR out at SHOT Show 2018 and I was thoroughly impressed. I helped Nikon out working their booth and got to hear all the great comments about this new optic and the SuperDot reddot sight. The 2 comments I heard the most were, wow and it's about time! Nikon isn't going to bring something like this to the table without figuring out what the consumer wants and meeting those needs. Right now the SPUR is only available for a picatinny rail mount and the same for the SuperDot. Both have 5-year warranties, top battery compartment replacement and 15,000 hours of battery life. Nikon's Trucolor is great in that it removes the blue tint often seen through reflex-style sights. They seem to be well recived and are flying off shelves. I think Nikon will have plates for different handguns in the very near future.

My vote is for Vortex Sparc II. Just picked one up for about $180. Bunch of torture testing videos/articles with it never losing the dot/zero. No stock QD mount though, I went aftermarket for that but it does come with 2 height sight stock mounts.
