AR10 Scope Magnification for 300yds

Hi,

I just built an AR10 and I plan to shoot out to 300 yards. My budget is about $1,000 and I'm looking at the Trijicon Accupoint Scopes, but not sure on which magnification range to go with. Naturally I would assume that it's better to have a larger magnification range available, so that if I ever want to go shooting at further distances, then I can. Are there any drawbacks from running a scope with a larger magnification range, than a scope with a smaller magnification range?

If cost between these scopes is not an issue, then which would you recommend?

It depends if you want to be able to see the bullet holes i.e. target shooting. If you just want to hit, then it really doesn't matter.

The larger objectives are generally beneficial when in lower lighting conditions such as shooting at dusk or hunting applications. In addition, the larger objectives might require higher mounts which may require a raised cheek rest.

Higher magnifications also amplify movement through the view, so your minor human movements (breathing, jitters, etc...) will be amplified at higher magnifications.

There is also the matter of glass quality/clarity and sharpness at max zoom. Some scopes are excellent at X ranges, much not so clear at max zoom. I found this to be the case with optics with a large low to high power range. Parallax is also another consideration.

That all being said, I've used 1-4, 1-6, 3-9, and 4-12 for 300 yard distances on my AR-10. 3-9 seems to work best for my needs, although I could certainly get by with the 1-4 or 1-6. Then again, I only care about hitting and not about consistent bullseye accuracy.

What Anbu said and also depends on what you're going for. Light weight, competition, a specific build, precision, plink, ect.

For 300 yds no reason to break the bank. Could spend 300 and get a good scope that will serve you even going out to 600. 4x14 is a good scope for all applications. Just make sure you get one with a good turret system. PArms and Vortex offer good options in a mid range price point.

This will be for bench shooting and I am looking for consistent bullseye accuracy.

So let's say I have the following two scopes and I'm shooting out to 300 yards. If I keep the magnification for both scopes at 9X. I know that the 50mm lense will collect more light. But other than that, if I were to run both scopes at the same 9x magnification would there be any benefit or downside of one vs the other?

Scope #1: 3-9x40

Scope #2: 5-20x50

No, but if you intend to use any ballistic reticles, they can only be used at max magnification. Of course, what I mentioned earlier re: picture clarity at max magnification may apply. You'll have to compare the two scopes.

I shoot my Savage model 10 308 with UTG 14X44 upto 600 yards. No problem after 500 rounds.

Couldn’t go wrong with an SWFA SS 10x or 12x in this application. I have the side focus 10x on my 308. If you’re really trying to make little groups in paper then you could go to the 16x if you and your eyes like more magnification.

The rear focus models are $299, and they’re a great value! They are available in both milradian and MOA to suit you’re preferences, and they have a bunch of elevation adjustment if you decide to reach out further. I just bought another mil/mil, this one a rear focus 6x. I think they still have free shipping going on right now too.

You need to watch tibosaurus rex on youtube. He will break it down for you. Depends on intended use. You always want more than you have. I would go with the 5-20x50 of the ones listed. Nightforce that is.

+1 for the Nikon M-308...it's what I put on my M&P 10 and it has worked out great for me.

Bushnell Engage Series, Athlon Midas Tac or Ares BTR, Toric UHD, Burris XTR II

I’d say go with the Ares BTR. It is overkill for 300 yards but you will be able to see the bullet holes. Also for when you get bored shooting at 300 and want to go further it can easily handle the distance.
