Decent micro red dot / RMR style optics for shotgun

I have been contemplating getting a simple red dot for my 870 Tactical but don't want to spend a ton on it. Ideally I am looking for something that will hold zero well enough on a shotgun. I run Aimpoints on my rifles but don't want to spend that much for the shotgun.

Just looking for some suggestions. This is fairly low on my priority list so any information will be useful for later on.

The RMR Type 1's are getting pretty cheap here on the forum and also the Eotech/Insight MRDS is a great sight that I've used on my Mossberg 500. Its held up well. it uses Burris Fastfire mounts if I recall correctly. Also anything from Vortex should be good to go with their awesome lifetime warranty.

Typically Aimpoints don’t cost that much on the used market. $200-$400 in freestates. You will pay like $100-$200 for a lessor bnib optic.

Go used/new Aimpoint. You know they work or go Trijicon.

I personally use irons and they are good enough for what I need to get done in regards to Shotguns.

Did you have any kind of budget in mind?

Any preference between open reflex and a tube sight?

What kind of mount setup do you have on your 870?

Not really a budget in mind right now but would prefer to keep it around $250'ish if I do it.

I have only shot with tube sights (Aimpoint PRO on one AR and Aimpoint Micro T2 on an AR9). The receiver is drilled and tapped from the factory to be able to mount a picatinny rail on the top so I would ideally want a low mount to keep the sight as low as possible.

Right now, it only has a bead sight on the barrel and that's it. Although not ideal, it works for me as this is what I have trained with for so long and can hit 8" plates at around 40-50 yards with slugs. I just feel that a decent red dot would be pretty rad on the shotgun as I really like them on my carbines.

Ideally, an Aimpoint H1 or similar would be what I would go for but am curious on other good options that is a less expensive.

This sight while great on an AR setup is a little bulky for a shotgun application. At least twice as large as the micro series and large than most if not all eotechs. It is definitely rugged enough for use on 12 gauge shotguns, but from the title, it looks like your looking for something smaller.

With a $250.00 budget a Burris Fastfire III would work well. I’ve had one for a couple of years on a Turkey shotgun and have no complaints. I’d also be willing to try a Vortex Venom.

For most setups I have tried, mounting a red dot on a pic rail puts the optic up a bit high compared to your cheek weld when using a factory stock.

I would recommend going with a direct mount like KE Arms or Aridus industry and a holosun/primary arms optic....should be within budget
