ACOG reticle performance question

Just got used ACOG TA50R-4, 3x24 with Red Crosshair Reticle. Can't say that i like it much, wondering if there is a problem. In a dark room or when covering that red tube on top, red crosshair part of the reticle not visible at all. In the room with lights on, only visible when pointing to the dark areas. How bright reticle should be? Should I be able to see reticle in the dark room? room with lights on?

I'm not sure what your use for the ACOG is going to be, but one way to temporarily fix the problem is to duct tape a minature light stick over the fiber optic. If your in a darkened area like you described, looking/aiming to a lighted area, the glow stick over the fiber optic will significantly brighten the reticle. If you get a small enough light stick and quality tape, the tape prevents any light from coming out where the light stick is. If you haven't, you might want to look at some of the other reticle's as the chevron is easier to see in a dark enviroment. They are excellent sights for most applications.

The tritium isn't super bright. Kind of hard to give some sort of reference. At least nothing like with the fiber optic brightening up the reticle. If the tritium were as bright as the fiber optic it would be too bright for night time use. The tritium will get dimmer over the years but it is warrantied for 15 years so unless yours is really old it should be fine.

That is the thing, allegedly scope I purchased about 1 year old. As soon as i turn off lights or cover fiber optic i do not see reticle glowing at all. And with fiber optic during the day I can only see glowing reticle when pointing to dark areas or closing objective with hand

I have not looked with the lights off. In daylight my ACOG is very bright, you would not have an issue on the brightest days.

Sounds like something is off to me.

If it has serial number maybe you can contact the manufacture and ask for born on date.

In pitch dark, I can see the tritium point in my ACOG reticle. Of course, not that this is useful since I can barely see anything, but it is working.

I have a TA31F...no matter how dark it gets I can always see the chevron perfectly. Even in pitch black darness. I don't have to focus on it to see it. It is bright enough in any light that my eye goes right to it.

I experienced the problem you are having with their TriPower 30mm sight but they intentionally tuned down the tritium on that so it would work with night vision and had it rely on a battery for normal use...the ACOGs don't do that.

I would contact Trijicon. What you are describing is contrary to many years of experience with them.

If this is your first ACOG, you may find the trilium reticle low... and that is how it is supposed to be... it is NO WHERE near how bright a battery lit reticle is.... it also take some time for your eyes adjust to ambient light to be able to use the ACOG's reticle.

But as many has said... send your S/N to trijicon, they will able to tell your the age of your trilium... but the likelihood of that being 15+ yrs old is very slim... I had looked at 10+ yrs old ACOG and they are still very visible (altho dim)

By the way, the chervon or "larger" reticles are easier to see than the crosshair ones.

Called Trijicon the guy told its not in his system, so most likely before 2002 he said. So much for 'year old' mint condition ACOG.

you should get an amber reticle...it is much brighter in dark environments

also depending on the reticle you choose it will help you get a better/easier target picture

chevron reticles are good for fast target aquisition

So, 3 weeks later received a replacement, a brand new unit from Trijicon. Much brighter during day, and visible during total darkness.
