    700 5r .308 scope advice

I'm currently looking into a scope for my Remington 700 mil spec 5r in .308. I would like to reach out to 1000+ yds at the range. I also may have an opportunity to do some hog control on a large ranch in Texas. I'd like to keep my budget under $850 for the glass. I'm currently leaning towards a refurbished vortex viper in 4-16x50. I notice a lot of shooters on Calguns are opting for higher magnifications. I know that with paper at 1k yds more magnification would be better at times. However, in the vortex line the next step up is 6-24x. I'm concerned that 6x might be too much for hunting purposes. I know in California I leave my 3-9x on 3 and have never dialed it up. There were times I could have but time was of the essence. Even at 3x target acquisition is not easy within 100 yds.

    Any advice or suggestions? Thanks.

The Vortex 6-24X is limited to around 50 MOA of internal travel if I remember right. After zeroing on a level base you may end up with as little as 20-25 MOA of adjustment for drop compensation. The 4-16X is a bit better at 75 MOA, but still is getting dangerously close to bottoming out if your dialing for 1000 yards. In the same price range as the Vortex you also have the Burris XTR II scopes, which typically have 90 to 110 MOA of internal travel depending on model. Personally I really like the 3-15X50 version. The one I have has some of the clearest glass I've ever shot with. The zero stop on the XTR II scopes is a really nice feature too. Very solid and fool proof as well as easy to set.

What does the military use? Might be an appropriate choice.

If you are on a budget get one of the black friday SWFA scopes. They've got their 3-15 for 500 bucks.

I have the vortex viper hst 5x20 on mine on a 15 moa leupold base. I can adjust to 1000+ after zeroing. Most around here go with the pst but i didn't care about an illuminated Reticle. I paid $639 for mine on sale at cabellas this summer.

Save and buy a better glass. It makes all the difference in the world. I finally sold all mine and kept 3 pieces. I use my Night Force BEAST on most of my rifles, I just write down my different zeros and go to town. No issues or loss of zero.

I never understood why guys buy glass for every rifle, add that all up and boom you just bought more than 1 really nice piece of glass.

              Don't skimp on glass

I'm running the 5x25 XTRii on my 5R with 20 moa base. Plenty of scope to get to 1000 with my 185g Berger handloads.

I’m running a new Leupold 8.25-25x50 LRP with the TMR reticle on my 5R .308, I highly recommend it. I got it for just under $650

Thanks for the suggestions guys. For those worried about being able to dial in enough drop, I'm thinking a 20 moa rail. I want to keep the low power magnification low for easier target acquisition. I have a 4-16 leupold on another rifle. I'm pretty happy with its magnification.

To the Burris fans, do you really think it's clarity and light gathering beats the vortex pst line? I'm leaning toward a refurb from a and a optics. I wanted to try something new even though leupold has always been my go to.

This is the executive summary and overall scores from an epic scope field test focused on long-range, tactical rifle scopes in the $1,500+ price range. This represents an unprecedented, data-driven approach to evaluating the best scopes money can buy. Over 400 hours have gone into this research, and the line-up and tests are built on ...

I got the non-illuminated, SCR MIL reticle version of the Burris XTR II 3-15x50 (MFR # 201034) for $687 from Optics Planet. Just start up a customer service chat window and ask for 10% off the current price. They'll do it.

                          Good scopes.

I think Burris had the Vortex PST scopes in mind when they designed the XTR II series. They made the XTR II scopes specifically to compete in the sub $1000 market that was being dominated by the PST line. Personally, I think Burris knocked it out of the park. From what I have seen, the XTR II scopes are simply better in pretty much every measurable category than comparable PST scopes. Clarity, brightness, turret tracking, zero stop, adjustment range, overall build quality, and pretty much every other aspect except overall weight. The XTR II scopes are kind of tank-ish with their 34mm tubes.
