What height scope rings to clear AR front sight post?

I wouod like to keep iron sight capabilities with my front sight post. But I don't want it to interfere with a scope retical.

Any suggestions for rings that will put the line of sight above the front post?

Scope details? Tube diameter, objective size?

Optical Center for AR15 is usually around 1.5", that is what most one piece mounts are designed around.

Also, usually any optic 3x or higher will not allow you to view the front sight.

      It's a Nikon Bushmaster 4-12 with 1" tube.

For reference, Badger Ordnance Extra High rings put the optical center at 1.375" above the rail. With the type of optic you're using, you won't notice the front sight looking through your scope.

I should be looking for something 1-1.5" high?

It depends. Does your current cheekweld have you lined up perfectly to use the iron sights? If so, you're probably going to want higher rings, unless you're using a stock with an adjustable cheek piece to give you the right position, in which case, you might be able to use the lower rings. Your head position will determine the best right height for you.

Yeah. The way the rifle is right now is lined up for sight picture/cheekweld.

Another question...would I be better served with a lower powered scope, say 2-7 or 3-9, if I'm only shooting max 300 yards?

Unless you need the extra field of view, you're not losing much on the low end, but you do gain more magnification on the top end which will help you zoom in for a better view if needed. My own experience with scopes on an AR platform is that you'd most likely want some kind of cantilever mount because the length of pull puts you rather close to the scope and you may need it to give you some room, which you won't get with normal scope rings. Something like this Vortex cantilever mount.
